Breaking News: Another sister for Citybus!

Well, probably not so much a new sister rather a sister getting a bit bigger!

Go Ahead expands again:

On 29th February, First Group informed staff that they were intending to sell First London's Northumberland Park Depot operation, together with its route contracts, vehicles and staff to the Go-Ahead Group. Subject to successful negotiations, conclusion of the transfer is expected on or around 28th March.
Just thought you’d like to know!

Atlantean Sunday

The last few posts have been discussing what will be running on the streets on Plymouth so today lets have a reminder of what used to run on our streets. This Sunday the PCTPG will be running Atlantean 168 on a tour of some of routes that it used to run.

For more details you can contact Mike Hudson via his Facebook page HERE

      Bendy Stagecoaches

With all this talk of bendy bus operation in Plymouth its easy to forget that we have had proper bendy bus operation in Plymouth before. Stagecoach operated these two bendy coaches on the X38 Plymouth - Exeter service for a year or so. Can anyone supply us with the date range that these coaches were down here? I know it wasn't that long before they want back North and the service reverted back to hourly with standard Volvo Plaxton coaches.

        First time round the bendy

It does seem from comments left on this site, and elsewhere on 'the net', that First are indeed planning to run bendy buses in Plymouth on the Park & Ride services. There will be 9 coming down from Scotland to replace the current double decker's. It is not known where the Enviros will be going but it has been suggested they are heading out of the area, possibly to Weston-Super-Mare but none of this has been confirmed.
This is not the first time that bendy buses have hit the streets of Plymouth. In fact there have been quite a few over the years but up until now none of them have stayed. First Manchester 2201 X401CSG
In 2001 First Manchester 2201 (10071 in new money) visited Plymouth and was used for free rides at the Western National Rally, which was held at Seaton Barracks. I don't think it was used in service at anytime.
This bus was brand new at the time. Ironically it looks like it is still newer than the examples which are rumoured to be heading towards Plymouth as we are getting W reg buses.
Having said that, if they are refurbished properly and given non dating registrations most passengers wouldn't know quite how old they are as the Wright body design has aged really well and still looks more modern that most buses we have in Plymouth, although Citybus hope to get their new Volvo Wright buses on the road in April which might just highlight the contrast of Citybus giving us new and First replacing their newest buses with much older second-hand ones.
        As always plans can change...

          Going Ahead Strong

Revenue at the Go-Ahead Group in the first half of it 2012 financial year was up, at £1,199.5million (2011: £1,132.2). However operating profit dropped to £51.7million (2011: £59.0million).

          Bus & Coach

David Brown, Group Chief Executive, commented:
“I am pleased to report a good set of results for the first half of the financial year. Growth has continued across all of our businesses as the public seek high quality, convenient and value for money alternatives to the private car.

“In bus, our strategic focus of operating in more vibrant urban areas, predominantly in the South East, combined with innovative local marketing and the promotion of smart ticketing has continued to deliver passenger growth. We recently announced the acquisition of Carousel, a small bus business in High Wycombe, which fits perfectly with our strategy of acquiring bolt-on businesses which provide a solid basis for increasing passenger numbers.

“As London’s largest bus and rail operator we will play a significant role in providing transport services for the Olympic Games. We look forward to demonstrating the quality of our services and staff. In particular our high speed ‘Javelin’ rail services will transport spectators in an impressive seven minutes from St Pancras International to the Olympic Park.

“We have a very strong position in the UK rail market with our long term partner Keolis, with whom we have recently submitted initial bid documents for Thameslink and Essex Thameside. Together, we have been operating trains in the UK for 15 years, running around 5,500 services a day on our three franchises and carrying more passengers each year than on most European countries’ rail networks.

“The Group remains in a good financial position with strong cash generation and a robust balance sheet.

“Looking ahead, whilst we remain suitably cautious about the wider economic outlook, in rail we expect first half revenue growth trends to continue in the second half and in bus we expect a solid performance despite an impact from the implementation of a new contract.

“Overall, we continue to anticipate the Group will deliver full year results in line with management expectations.”

              Bendy to Coypool?

First Devon & Cornwall are already one of the select few operators of bendy buses within First Group as they operate them on the Eden Project contract. They have now added another one to the fleet with 10133 currently in Plymouth in what appears to be a fresh repaint in standard barbie livery.

I had heard it had been reported as being at The Ride but assumed it was here for repainting for the Eden contract, which I guess is still a possibility but I observed it coming out of the Coypool Park & Ride site on Monday although no passengers were being carried. Could it be a test to see if they would be suitable for the Park & Ride PR2? The only problem I can see is the congestion on the Royal Parade bus stops.

It did look like Citybus were likely to take on some of Go Aheads Mercedes Citaro bendys as it seemed to work on the 21 route but this seems to have been put on hold. Maybe the forthcoming change to the 21 with it no longer going up into Steer Park will make it a more bendy – friendly route?

Sadly I was unable to get a photo as I was sat in McDonalds stuffing my face at the time but thanks to ‘awsnews’ I can bring you a photo of the same bus taken back in July still in Glasgow.

                A new sister for Citybus

Go-Ahead Group is pleased to announce the forthcoming acquisition of Carousel Buses Limited, based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The acquisition will take place on Saturday 3 March 2012.
Carousel currently operates around 50 buses in the Wycombe area and runs services to Heathrow Airport, Uxbridge, Chesham and Watford. The company mainly operates a mix of commercial bus services and schools bus contracts.

David Brown, Group Chief Executive said: "Carousel fits perfectly with our strategy of acquiring innovative, well-managed businesses which have a strong commercial core and can provide a solid basis for increasing passenger numbers. We are pleased to be taking on a bus company which prides itself on running a safe, reliable, affordable and customer focused service.
"In 2011 we acquired Thames Travel which was a similar size business and has been highly successful since joining the group, with significant tender wins. It has also successfully converted several services which were subsidised by local authorities into commercial services. Thames Travel has retained its own identity and prospers under our devolved business model. I am confident that we can repeat this success with the purchase of Carousel."
The current owners of Carousel, Steve Burns and John Robinson, will step back from day-to-day operation on acquisition, and will act as advisers to the new owners. Carousel will be run by the Oxford Bus Company director team under the leadership of Managing Director Philip Kirk. The company will retain its existing brand identity.

Time to put the Great back in to Great Western?

The current contract to operate the Great Western rail franchise is about to enter its last year. First Group are not taking up the option to extend the franchise will will now come to an end in March 2013. First are almost certainly among those operators who will have registered their interest in taking the new 15 year franchise. The deadline to register an interest has now expired so I am sure it wont be too long before we hear exactly who wants to run our trains for the next 15 years.

There was what first appeared to be an interesting development when the BBC claimed that “Passenger levels on railway branch lines are being grossly underestimated in documents given to firms bidding for a franchise” Reading into the story it appears to be one station (Lelant Saltings) on one branch line (St Ives) so isn't quite the scandal that the headline promises.

                  FGW leaving Plymouth

Another railway news headline that caught my eye recently was equally disingenuous:

Plymouth MP almost missed launch of £100million train campaign - because there was no train

She didn't almost miss the meeting because there was no train. She checked the timetables and realised there was no suitable train available so she made alternative arrangements to get there. This is no different to checking your local bus timetable and discovering there is no direct bus to where you are going. You look to see what other options are available and then make plans accordingly. That's life.

Many will agree that “It is ridiculous that I am unable to travel to Plymouth in time for a meeting starting at 10:30am.” Sadly her government when it was in power did little to make such a journey possible. The current government are spending a lot less on transport so are unlikely to achieve that much. This is not me trying to make a political point as neither party seems to have a clue when it comes to public transport. Transport is one of the very few areas that Labour have actually agreed with most of the current government spending cuts.

Apart from the sensational headline the rest of the story is straightforward enough explaining that "Leading rail industry consultants Steer Davis Gleave were jointly commissioned by the Chamber and the Council to look into the economic case for better rail connectivity and found that for an additional operating cost of £10 million a year, the economy stands to gain £94 million” This may well be the case but someone has to find that additional £10 million and Plymouth wont be the only area that will try and make such claims.

I am sure we will be hearing a lot more about the Great Western franchise over the coming months. The start of the new franchise in April 2013 is indeed a great opportunity to do something different and actually gain an improved railway service. I just wish I had the confidence in those in charge to actually take the opportunity…

Plymouth Bus Routes No7: Target Travel 39

Due to a combination of loss of internet last weekend, and a power failure in my computer room, and the length and complexity of this route, it has taken me two weeks to get this one ready. I chose Target Travel 39 for number 7 in the series because I found myself waiting for a bus home from the City Centre and noticed a ‘new’ Dennis Dart on Royal Parade. I went to investigate and it was Target Travel and the Dart was newly acquired and still running in red and grey. The photo will follow in the week ahead. Seeing as I had plenty of time I decided to catch the 39 to Asda as I had never been on that route before. The driver warned me it took a long time to get there – which just made it all the more fun for me.
The route video below is the longest of the series so far as it really does go around all the houses. It is a real test for the driver as you can see on the video there are a few places where there is very little room. All it takes is one badly parked car and the bus would be stuck. The section by Austin Farm was great fun and we did have to wait for one van driver to move his van up a bit so we could get passed.
So if you find yourself with a lot of spare time on your hands I would recommend a ride on the 39…

Having been very quiet so far this year VOSA has seen a lot of activity this last few days. On the site on the 6th February we have the following notifications. Ageless?

It seems the next repaint to hit the road for the new look Citycoach fleet will be 315 which should be out and about in the next day or two. It seems a good time for a reminder of how she looked when brand new:

I know some think this livery is quite dated but it still looks quite fresh to me. Its nice and simple yet bold and I am not aware of anyone else using the same style. I have never been a fan of the grey though and I do like the new blue livery even more. Its hard to believe that the above photo was taken in 2003, almost 9 years ago. When this coach is in the new livery she wont look out of place next to the brand new ones, only the registration giving away how old she is. I have never been a fan of this style of Plaxton bodywork, seems quite bland compared with other designs out there, but perhaps that has helped it to remain ‘ageless – and not to age quite as much as some designs have done.

                                Life after Plymouth: R309STA

It hasn't taken Southern Vectis long to repaint former Citycoach R309STA into its smart Moss livery. Of course if it had stayed in Plymouth it would eventually end up looking not too dissimilar - and equally smart.

People have to pay to catch the bus–shock horror!

Poor Plymouth Citybus. This week sees yet another ‘non story’ being blown up in the local press:

A GROUP of angry parents have formed a pressure group after Citybus charged their children £6 each to get to school for forgetting their pre-paid bus passes – and then refused to refund the money. Jane Scott, from Crapstone, and a number of other parents in the village are busy getting people to sign a petition in a bid to get Citybus to change its policy on refunding charges incurred when school children forget their pre-paid bus passes.

“I wasn’t annoyed that she had to pay – I understand their no pass, no travel policy completely, but what I fail to see is why they have refused me a refund when in effect I have already paid for the trip.

She is now questioning the legalities behind being made to pay twice for the same journey and has contacted Trading Standards. She said: “I can’t believe how awful Citybus are being – I’m not sure it’s even legal. “I have formed this pressure group to tackle the problem head-on. We need to get this sorted – it’s not fair.

Peter Oliver, commercial manager at the bus company, said: “We carry a large number of customers every day and we have never had to even address this issue in the past because it has never been a problem.

“It’s a simple policy – if you forget your pre-paid pass, then you have to pay – people accept that and it’s the same on every mode of transport.

                                  Full story This is Plymouth

I have a bus pass myself which means I have pre paid my bus fares. However, if I loose or forget my pass I have to pay on the bus. Its annoying to myself but its just the way it is. Its never occurred to me to try and get the fares back. I am not sure it would even be possible to administer even if the company were happy to oblige. Even if i can prove I had a valid pass for a journey which I had to pay for, how to I prove that I actually made that journey?

The “I’m not sure its even legal” comment is my favourite!
