ABBA

another emailed posting:

Rail passengers at Plymouth station will be serenaded by one of ABBA's top pop hits this morning (29 Octber) as Network Rail and First Great Western promote temporary changes to London services from Devon and Cornwall this Christmas.

Local tribute band ABBA's Angels will perform 'Waterloo', as rail services into London from the region will terminate at London Waterloo station rather than Paddington between 27 – 30 December 2010 and on 1 January 2011, while improvement work is carried out in the Reading area

Network Rail and First Great Western are using the event to urge passengers to plan ahead and arrange their festive travel now as tickets for Christmas travel are already on sale.

Chris Rayner, Western route director, Network Rail, said: "The improvement works at Reading this Christmas are the first step in Network Rail's project to improve the Great Western mainline, cutting delays and building capacity for services to London from Devon and Cornwall."

"We're working at Christmas because the railway is quieter at this time of year and we'll be able to concentrate a lot of work into a short space of time than spread out disruption over a prolonged period. Most importantly, we have also created room on the railway for trains to be diverted to Waterloo instead so that passengers can continue to stay on the trains without breaking their travel with replacement buses, significantly minimising disruptions."

First Great Western Projects and Planning Director, Matthew Golton said: "Although Network Rail's work will have an impact on our services this Christmas, we've been working together to make sure the railway remains open for business.

"The work is vital to making improvements to the railway. We have planned our services for the festive period very carefully – including adding extra services and re-routing others – to make sure we can get our customers to where they need to go. I'd urge people to plan carefully before making their journeys."

The Council is inviting people to comment on a draft plan for developing the city’s transport links over the next 15 years.
Plymouth’s third Local Transport Plan (LTP), set to be adopted in the spring, will set out the city's long-term objectives and strategy for transport from 2011 to 2026. It will also include a more detailed plan of how the Council will invest its transport funding during the first three years of that period.
The city faces many transport challenges in the future, not least providing the improved transport infrastructure and services needed to cope with the planned growth of the population and economy.
The Council would like everyone’s views about whether the plan has identified the most pressing transport problems in the city and sets out the right approach for improving transport now and in the future.
Councillor Kevin Wigens, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "Plans for improving the city’s transport network are relevant to everyone living and working in the area, as well as visitors. It is important that the new strategy takes into account the views of people who travel in and around the city and we want as much feedback as possible on our plans.”
A 12-week period of public consultation will begin on Monday 25 October, with roadshow events being held at venues across the city where people can view the plan and share their views.

Another email posting...

It seems that the Northern Connect Taxibus service has again come to a halt. It didnt turn up for me yesterday and this morning one of the regulars told me she had heard that it had been stopped again.

As this service is run for Target Travel by Taxifast / Taxifirst I naturally headed over the the Target Travel web site which still gives full timetable for the service.

There is nothing under the Plymouth City Council web site either.
Nothing on This is Plymouth yet either.
Or anywhere else really.

I have always found this service reliable and the drivers are very friendly. For the regular passengers who knew about the service it was great. Many however probably let it go by not knowing what it was. The publicity for the service was extremely poor. Timetables were few and far between.

As an expiriment to see if taxibuses could be used to fill in the gaps left by service cuts elsewhere it has to be concluded that this has been a failure. With a bit more effort I still believe it could have been so much better used.

The Northern Connection

Transport improvements along the Northern Corridor (the main route from Derriford into the city centre) have been given the thumbs up in a survey of regular travellers.
Last year the City Council invested around £2 million in a package of improvement works, developed using feedback from public consultation carried out in 2007.
Improvements included a £750,000 upgrade of the George park and ride site, new bus and cycle lanes, real time passenger information displays at bus stops, raised kerbs to help people get on and off buses, pedestrian crossing improvements and resurfacing works.
People travelling along the route were asked to evaluate the improvements through an online survey and the majority of respondents said they felt the works had had a positive impact on buses and bus users (70 per cent) and on taxis, motorbikes and scooters (63 per cent). Of the 146 people who responded, 83 per cent travel daily on the corridor.
The results of the survey show that the improvements appear to be benefitting bus lane users, with no negative impact on the travelling experience of motorists, cyclists or pedestrians.
The new bus lane outside Derriford Hospital, which connects with the bus lane on Derriford Road, has improved 63 per cent of bus users’ journeys to and from Derriford and 40 per cent of motorists reported that they would now consider using public transport to get to the hospital.
New digital messaging signs on the roadside and real time passenger information (RTPI) displays at bus stops were also well received. Sixty-nine per cent of taxi users, motorcyclists and scooter users said they found the messaging signs useful for planning their journeys and 81 per cent of bus passengers said they found the RTPI displays at bus stops useful.
Both bus passengers and motorists said the removal of some of the right hand turns off Outland Road had been effective but some felt that this needed to be better enforced and the Council is now looking to address this.
Only 13 cyclists and pedestrians completed the survey but seven of these respondents said that improvements such as the additional bus and cycle lanes and resurfacing on Tavistock Road had improved their overall cycling experience. This is very encouraging because cyclists were among those least satisfied with the facilities on the Northern Corridor in 2007. The Council will continue work to improve the continuity of cycling infrastructure on the corridor.
Improvements that people are least satisfied with appear to be those at Drake Circus, where motorists report that they are still experiencing problems with the new road layout. It typically takes around six months for drivers to familiarise themselves with a new road layout so some uncertainty is to be expected. However, the situation is improving and the scheme is helping to address congestion on this part of the network. The Council will continue to monitor traffic flow in this area.
Councillor Kevin Wigens, Cabinet Member for Transport said: "We’re really pleased that improvements along the Northern Corridor have had a positive impact on buses, taxis, motorbikes and scooters without affecting other motorists or pedestrians. The programme of works was developed using feedback from people travelling on this route and it’s great that they have seen improvements to their journeys so quickly.
"We would like to thank everyone who completed the latest survey and will use their feedback to guide future programmes of work on the corridor. One of the areas we plan to look at is the section between the George park and ride and Woolwell, the ‘pinch point’ most frequently mentioned in public comments.”
The 2009/10 programme of improvements is part of a continuing investment on the Northern Corridor, with works this year focusing on Manadon roundabout. Improvements here include a more responsive and energy-efficient traffic light system, new lane designations, clearer signage and the repainting of white lines and road markings designed to reduce queuing and congestion on all approaches to the roundabout, including the A38 slip roads.
Transport improvements along this key route, alongside policies and planning documents such as the Derriford and Seaton Area Action Plan, will help to support the growth of the city and improve the travelling experience and choices of everyone using this part of the city's transport network.
For more information and to view the full results of the survey visit our Northern Corridor web pages.

Off and On

Without any warning Plymouth lost its Northern Connect Taxibus service yesterday morning. Then, without any warning, it got it back again!
There are a few of us that regularly catch the Taxi bus that arrives at Derriford about 8:10am. This morning it turned up as normal just after 8am off Asda when the driver informed us that this was to be the last run as all the drivers had to told to stop running at the end of the current journey. As far as they were concerned it was the end of the Northern Connect Taxi bus service. They had no idea why it was at such short notice.
I happened to be down at Crownhill at lunchtime for a spotting session with the camera and noticed that they seemed to be back on the road so I caught one back to Derriford. They drivers had received a further phone call later that morning telling them to get back to work as the service was back on!
Needless to say the drivers are as confused as the passengers are. Whether the news will get to some of the regular passengers for tomorrow morning remains to be seen as a couple of them have no alternative bus service at all so will really miss the service if and when it does come to an end.

in a bit of a hurry

A train has broken the record for the fastest time from Plymouth to London Paddington, First Great Western (FGW) has claimed. The non-stop train reached Paddington in 2 hours 43 minutes, 17 minutes faster than the previous record. FGW said fast journey times between the South West and London were very important to the company. The company said timetables had been developed to best meet the needs of the region within the constraints of available resources and the existing rail infrastructure. As an example, FGW cited a new high-speed morning service from December which will leave London Paddington at 0706 to provide an earlier morning business arrival into Exeter, with connections to Plymouth. In July the company announced it was adding more carriages on its Night Riviera service because of the increase in demand for the sleeper from Penzance to Paddington. BBC News
FGW leaving Plymouth
There was more on the excellent Transport of Delight blog last week:
The journey was made in 2:43, though booked for 2:41. Official figures show the train departed Plymouth five seconds early at 12:49:55 and that it arrived in Paddington two minutes and 18 seconds late at 15:33:18, which (to the second) as a recorded journey time of 2:43:23. The specific record-breaking attempt was undertaken by FGW to promote its new morning service between London and Exeter, connecting there for Plymouth.
Finally there is a nice little, if somewhat pedantic discussion on how the official timing of the record was conducted over at Railway Eye

Buses getting smarter soon?

A "ticketing revolution" which could see electronic smartcards replacing traditional paper tickets for bus and train journeys across the South West is now well under way.
Transport minister Norman Baker launched a scheme yesterday to allow companies and councils to link up their schemes and create one multi-purpose card.
Luas smartcard readerThe £4 million regional "back office system", the first in Europe, should allow passengers in Bristol to add tickets to their cards for journeys in Devon and Cornwall via mobile phones, whilst on the move.
Ultimately, people could travel to school or work, visit a leisure centre, borrow a book from the library and then take a train home, without ever needing to carry cash.
The project, which adopts the Integrated Transport Smartcard Organisation (ITSO) protocols has been four years in the making, with involvement from the University of Plymouth.
Professor Jon Shaw, of the university's centre for sustainable transport, said the scheme reduces the initial capital costs and makes it easier to set up smart ticketing schemes.
"The operational efficiencies will ensure faster and more reliable services, which in turn will have a beneficial effect on transport flows and carbon emissions," he said.
"And the consumer will further benefit from better services and the flexibility to add tickets on their cards in Bristol and use them on buses in Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and Dorset."
Since 2007 the Department for Transport has invested heavily in smartcard technology, requiring all English concessionary passes new rail franchises to be ITSO compliant.
At least 1,500 buses will be "smartcard enabled" for concessions and multi-purpose ticketing by end 2011.
A grant scheme was also unveiled yesterday, at a cost of £1.85m, to upgrade buses with ITSO smart ticketing equipment in the South West.
South West Smart Applications Ltd, a new mutual not-for-profit company established by bus companies and local authorities in the region, was also launched.
There will also be a free consultancy support programme, worth £120,000, for South West local authorities and operators, providing specialist ITSO consultants.
A dozen "interoperable" smartcard ticketing products are planned to go live in the South West by the end of next year. Full story This is Plymouth

Outgoing Citybus 278

Plymouth Citybus havent really been big fans of route branding, or at least they aren't yet - who knows what the continued Go-Aheadisation of Citybus will bring? The 34 is probably the only major route which has received route branding with the three Enviros still vinyled up, although it wont be for much longer as they are due for repaint and will receive standard livery in due course. This was more down to the request of the South West Regional Development Agency who provided funding for the route. The previous example of Citybus route branding was this half hearted attempt for use on the 152. I haven't actually seen it on the 152 itself for ages but as far as I know it carried this 'livery' up till the end.

Tavy Linx Fun and Games

From the 31st October First D&C will be running a new timetable on the Plymouth to Tavistock route. This is mainly so they can run a couple of buses in Glenholt Woolwell to replace the 7 which is being scrapped.
For Plymouth to Tavistock runs this results in an unusual timetable to say the least!

The main day time service sees 4 buses an hour depart from Royal Parade at 10 mins (83), 25 mins (84) 40 mins (83) and 55 mins (86) past the hour. Note that apart from the last few evening runs no buses serve Bretonside Bus Station (ironic that they only go into Bretonside at night - ie when its at its most unpleasant state!)

The 83's go via Milehouse, Crownhill and stay on the main road through to Yelverton at 41 and 11 mins past the hour and on the Tavistock offering a journey time from end to end of just over an hour.

The 84 and 86 in between go via Mutley Plain - Crownhill then into Derriford and then into Woolwell before proceeding through to Yelverton and Tavistock (86 via Bishopsmead and 84 via Whitchurch). They arrive at Yelverton at 41 and 11 mins past the hour which is exactly the same time as the 83s so for much of the day there will in theory at least be two buses following each other for much of the journey into Tavistock!
This means a 15 min frequency from Royal Parade becomes a 30 min frequency from Yelverton.

Coming back its better spaced out with departures from Tavistock every 15 mins at the same times as the Plymouth departures. It does seem that if buses are running to timetable then buses will be sitting around for at least 10 mins at each end before returning. Plenty of room at Tavistock Bus Station for that but Royal Parade is already overcrowded at the best of times.

I know staff at Derriford are up in arms at having to catch the Tavistock buses to get to Woolwell as previously when this has been tried there have been major problems with buses being already full by the time they get to Derriford. If they are double decked it might help but the majority of Tavistock runs at the moment are single decked.

I am sure the passengers will make their voice heard if it all goes pear shaped. I dont know when the next Derriford bus users forum is due to take place but I am sure it will be fun to go to... Ugo the long way round

One of the few new Ugobus services that seems to be doing ok is the 15 as it offers something different to the other services in the area. It has also generally been pretty reliable (apart from the evening peak through Derriford which messes all the buses up) especially when compared with the 50. I do however fear all that is about to change...
At the end of October First pull their 7 off. More on this later. One consequence of this is that the 15 will be routed through Marjon in its place. This means that the Mainstone - City runs will now go up past Derriford then come back though Marjon and then down into Derriford. The City - Mainstone run probably wont make much difference. Looking at the new timetable the normal day time service has been given one extra minute journey time!
I see the City bound journeys go via North Road East which apparently save two minutes but I cant help but feel everything is going to be a lot tighter on this route now. Certainly the Derriford peak will now cause even more problems for this route if the buses have to go up to Marjon and then back into Derriford.

This was of course tried by Citybus a few years back with the 46/47. Didn't work well then either.

More tinkering with the 46/47 - these routes have probably changed more times than any other Citybus routes this last few months. I am guessing this is adjusting the routes through Kings Tamerton taken by the 16 and 46/7 although it may just be coincidence that both of these routes are changing.
Finally we have another one for today (5th October - seeing as I forgot to send this posting live this morning I can add to it!)

Just passing through

If you go by Milehouse Depot will you probably see a couple of Dennis Darts sitting there which look slightly different to the others. They currently have the first 2 of 16 which will be passing through Milehouse for refurbishment before being returned to London. At some time in the near future they will be refurbishing Darts from London - and keeping them for Plymouth. Just not these ones. Blue Triangle ©Brian George

who said bus driving was easy?

I didnt take that many photos at the Kingsbridge Running Day this year but I did take this little 90 second video from Crosville TA5 an AEC Regal III with Strachans B35R bodywork. This fine bus was one of 12 Strachans bodied examples bought by the company in 1948. In the video we have just pulled out of the bus stop at Totnes and just have the mini roundabout to negotiate a complete 360 turn and head off back to Kingsbridge. I may be wrong but I suspect there is no power steering fitted on this bus! A great driver on a great bus. Thanks to the driver of this, and indeed all the other drivers for a great day out.
