• From Monday 22nd January for a period of three weeks, Cormac are closing the A390 between Gunnislake Station and Gunnislake Bridge, between 0930 and 1630 Monday to Friday only. During this period buses will operate between Gunnislake Station and Callington with some variations to the existing timetable. A separate service (79B) will run every two hours between
• Callington and Tavistock via Treburley (A388) and Milton Abbot (B3362) also serving Gulworthy. Connections will be maintained in Callington for passengers wishing to travel between Gunnislake and Tavistock.
• In the third week of this closure from 5th February, the 1510 from Callington School and the 1525 from Tavistock will be allowed to follow the normal route, but for the first two weeks these journeys  will follow the diversion route via Treburley & Milton Abbot.
• A limited taxi shuttle service will be provided for passengers who are unable to walk up Gunnislake Hill to the Railway Station.

The Trust organises regular vintage bus running days, where you are able to enjoy free rides and sample a wide range of vehicles in their former habitats.

At our running days, you observe first-hand how the vehicles performed in service and build your own sense of how bus and coach travel has developed through the generations.
Our events have gained a nationwide reputation for authenticity and adventure, recreating the full experience of road transport in bygone days. They have become established, popular attractions for local communities and enthusiasts alike.

Cycle path extends just a little bit…

Continuing on from recent post…

Work on the next section of a walking and cycling link connecting Laira Rail Bridge and Plymstock will get under way on Monday 15 January.

The popular route will be extended further east along the railway alignment into Broxton Drive, at the entrance to the Saltram Meadow estate.

Part of the new path will run via Rock Gardens to avoid disturbing an area of environmentally sensitive habitat and a small section will be built on raised decking to protect the rare ‘Horrid Ground Weaver’ spider, found during extensive ecological surveys.

Rock Gardens itself has also recently benefited from resurfacing and street lighting under separate plans.

The walking and cycling link is being fully funded through the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Transport Board and Section 106 contributions and is expected to open in March.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning said: “This new link will mean that pedestrians, cyclists, joggers and those using mobility scooters and wheelchairs will be able to enjoy a virtually level, traffic-free journey from the Saltram Meadow development to Laira Rail Bridge and beyond. It will connect with the improvements being made between Laira Rail Bridge and the Barbican, which will also be completed in the spring.”

The plans were approved in December and can be viewed on our planning pages – the reference is 17/01978/FUL.

Future plans will see the route continue further east and connect into a proposed pedestrian and cycle bridge crossing over Billacombe Road, expected to be built this year.

Its nice to see this old line slowly being made useful again, even if it is taking ages. Better slow than never I guess!

Barbican to Laira Bridge improvements

 

Work to improve walking and cycling links between the Barbican and Laira Rail Bridge will get under way on Monday 8 January.

The route, which forms part of the South West Coast Path and National Cycle Network route 27, will benefit from improved road crossings, new and improved footways and off-road cycle paths, on-road cycle lanes, cycle parking, better signage and new lighting.

Benches will be provided on Breakwater Hill so that people can stop to enjoy the spectacular views and vegetation will be cut back.

Construction will start around Clovelly Road and Teats Hill Road, with temporary traffic lights in operation until mid-February.

Improvements to the off-road walking and cycling route on Finnigan Road will follow, lasting for around six weeks (during which time sections of the footway and cycleway will be closed).

The southern end of Faraday Road will need to be closed for one night – yellow signs will be put out in advance to let people know when this is due to take place. Work is expected to finish by April.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “These proposals were very well received during consultation and l look forward to seeing the improvements delivered in plenty of time for the summer. They will make it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle between our beautiful waterfront and the east of the city.”

Repairs to the Sutton Harbour footbridge are currently being scoped out but it is hoped these works will be completed in the summer.

The Barbican to Laira Rail Bridge improvements will be fully funded through the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Transport Board and Section 106 developer contributions.

Further enhancements are planned between Cattedown Road and Finnigan Road, with consultation expected to take place in Summer 2018.

The scheme includes:

• Improvements will be made on a number of roads including Teats Hill Road, Clovelly Road, Finnigan Road and Faraday Road, as well as Breakwater Hill, where benches will be installed so that people can stop and rest while enjoying spectacular views over Plymouth Sound.  Bollards will also be installed on Breakwater Hill to ensure that no unauthorised vehicles can be driven onto the path but allow access for people using mobility scooters.
• A minor extension of the 20mph speed limit to include an additional length of Teats Hill Road, as well as Commercial Ope.

he expected construction programme is as follows:

•           Commercial Road/Teats Hill Road junction – traffic lights from 8 January to mid February and footway closure.

•           Finnigan Road – footpath closure from mid February to end of March.

•           Faraday Road junction – night closure 22 March.

•           National Marine Aquarium – only pedestrian barriers around working areas. Access for public maintained at all times. Mid to end of March.

•           Breakwater Hill (and other areas) – reduced width footpaths for street lighting works.  Dates to be confirmed; works will be completed before the end of March.

Updates to construction dates will be published on this webpage.  Our contractor, South West Highways will liaise with residents to minimise disruption.

In order to undertake these works safely, three-way traffic lights will be in operation, and lanes will be narrowed.  Please note that delays are possible whilst these works are in progress.

Part of the scheme is to undertake resurfacing works at the junction of Victoria Wharf and also the entrance to Mitchell and Webber on Clovelly Road.  We anticipate that this work will be undertaken at night to ease any disruption to the businesses in both locations whilst keeping noise to a minimum. In addition, the parking area outside Marine House will also be affected whilst some of the works are in progress. We will notify residents and businesses that will be affected as soon as dates and times of these works are confirmed.

We will endeavour to maintain access to your property or business at all times and keep any inconvenience to a minimum, although some interruption and reduced access may be unavoidable and for this we apologise in advance.  Please speak with our operatives, if you have concerns about access.

In partnership with Sutton Harbour Holdings and the Environment Agency, work to repair the lock bridge will continue in the hope that it can be reopened in the summer.

I am not a cyclist but love this section as a good walk. It would be nice if they could add a few pointers along the way to illustrate just how this industrial area of Plymouth has changed so much over the years.

Derriford Developments

Some welcome news of more road developments at Derriford Hospital:

Work on a new bus link to Derriford Hospital will begin in spring 2019.

The Morlaix Drive Access Improvement and Bus Priority Scheme will widen Morlaix Drive between Brest Road and the hospital to provide improved access for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

Funding for the £4.7 million project will be part-funded by £3.3 million awarded to the council by the Department for Transport in October.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport and Planning, said: “This scheme is a critical piece of the public transport network and part of a package of transport infrastructure improvements aimed at increasing connectivity in the north of the city, particularly by more sustainable means of travel.

“The Morlaix Drive scheme will support increased travel by bus, helping to ensure that the additional travel demand from new housing and employment sites in the Derriford area is catered for, keeping the city moving as it grows and expands.”

Complementing the larger Derriford Transport Scheme, the improvements will enable buses to serve Derriford Hospital and the upgraded bus interchange area at the front of the hospital without using Derriford roundabout and Derriford Road.

This will support improved reliability of buses in the area and provide benefits for traffic using Tavistock Road. It will also maximise the benefits of the recent Marjon Link Road bus link.

Scheme designs are currently being worked up and public consultation will take place later in the year before final designs are agreed. Work is expected to begin in spring 2019.

This decision has been made under delegated authority and is subject to call in by scrutiny.

The Google Street view image above illustrates one of the big issues with this road currently - there is a very narrow bit which does not allow two way traffic and its right outside the ambulance station too! Drainage is also very poor along this road so its not a pleasant walk when its wet. As a short cut out from the hospital for buses this will save a lot of time and perhaps more importantly be great for me as I work down at the end of this road - hopefully will save me a walk from the hospital each day!

Fares up in Kernow

Bus fare rises are never good news but with inflation running as high as it is, costs are increasing so fare rises are almost inevitable. This week we see First put their fares up in Cornwall from this weekend just gone, 7th January:

Unfortunately we are having to raise our fares to reflect our operational costs. 

• Adult singles will increase by 20p 
• Adult returns will increase by 30p 
• Child singles will increase by 10p 
• Child returns will increase by 15p 
• Earlybird concession single tickets 40p
• Our 1 day & longer period season tickets will have no increases
• We will be offering some lower town fares in the county £1.40 single & £2.10 return.
• Truro, Penzance, Wadebridge, Bodmin, Bude, Camborne, Falmouth, Hayle, Newquay, Redruth, St Austell & St Ives

Whilst we would like to give you exact details on this unfortunately it’s too complicated due to varying routes into the above communities to be able to easily publicise this in an easily to understand format. As this is embedded into the data held within out ticket machines the driver will charge the appropriate fare for the journey undertaken.

As usual it hasn't gone down to well with passengers but as FK themselves point out

Actually this is only the second price increase since 2014 and does not apply to period tickets such as weekly tickets or those bought via our ‘M’ ticketing smartphone app. We do work hard to deliver good service to all our customers at a reasonable cost but we are a commercial business. We have done our best to absorb increases in our costs but when our costs increase we do have to eventually pass them on in order to maintain our services

 

 

 

 

 

Back again

For many years Plymouth was very much a Dennis Dart city. Most of them looking pretty much the same as most of the carried the long lived Pointer 2 bodywork which has aged pretty well. They are now reducing their foothold in Plymouth but one has now come back into service…

T139EFJ has been reinstated back into service with Plymouth Citybus where it is the last of the T reg batch.

It does of course carry the full swoops livery so most passengers wont notice it being any older than the others

Christmas Eve Accident

No matter how careful you are its a sad fact of life that accidents can and do happen. When the accident involves public transport its normally front page news. Sadly Christmas Eve saw an accident involving Plymouth Citybus which hit the headlines in The Herald when it was reported that a bus had hit a tree near Saltash

Police officers, paramedics and firefighters were called to the A38 at Tideford following reports the man, who is in his mid-60s, had suffered a suspected heart attack. In total ten people were injured after the Citybus vehicle veered off the carriageway and crashed into a tree at about 5pm. Police say children were among those hurt.

A spokesman from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We were called at 5.01pm following reports from members of the public that a bus driver had had a suspected heart attack before crashing into a tree. "He was rescued by firefighters and was conscious and breathing at the scene. "Several other people sustained minor injuries, including some children." The force spokesman added that later that evening the driver's condition was described as stable.

Following the crash, the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust said one man was taken to Derriford Hospital and nine others were treated and discharged at the scene.

Just as a matter of record the bus involved was 106. It was badly damaged so will be off the road for some time assuming it is economically worth repairing depending on how badly damaged the chassis is.

Much more important than a bus being damaged though is the effect an accident like this has on the people involved. There is never a good time to have an accident like this but it always seems worse when things like this happen at Christmas. This clearly could have been a lot worse but it would still have been a frightening experience for the passengers who must be feeling very lucky to have escaped with minor injuries. Our thoughts are with the driver who was not so lucky  and we hope he makes a full recovery.
