Reorganisations affect real people

I always try to be careful when it comes to reporting rumours especially when peoples jobs are at risk. If I hear something interesting, and it comes from several sources I will usually try and research a bit, ask a few people who should be 'in the know' and then often wait for some sort of official announcement. I can recall how difficult it was for some staff at Citybus when the sale was announced by the council, and then Go-Ahead took over and staff knew there would be some job cuts but were waiting to see who. I work in the Finance Department at Derriford Hospital and every day you watch the news you see stories of massive job cuts in the NHS and locally we can see Plymouth is not going to escape these cuts. Its not a great feeling, but life goes on...
One rumour which has popped up again recently has been that First Devon and Cornwall has been put up for sale. I have had several people ask me if I knew anything about this recently. It must be said that this is a rumour that comes around frequently, usually just after any service cuts, or depot sales, of which there have been plenty over the years. Of course the company never has been sold, and if anything the last couple of years has seen quite a turn around of the company, in Plymouth at least. However now we see FDC cutting back its Ugobus network with a couple of its new routes being cancelled shortly.
A comment left on this site

the talk at the first depot is still that we are up for sale, everything's dwindling away where will we be in 6 months or a years time???

The other rumour was that Devon and Cornwall was being merged with the Hampshire and Dorset operations. This one does seem to be happening although I have yet to see any official announcement on the net. I hear an announcement has been made to staff.
The excellent Omnibuses blog posted on the re-organisation of management at First Potteries which effectively gets split between Manchester and Midlands. Last year Essex and Eastern Counties were also merged.

As is often the case with Omnibuses the comments are well worth a read. In the comments to the PMT / Manchester merger we see it pointed out that

First have also announced the merger of the Bristol and South Wales operations and then further down we get to these two comments:
There is a rumour that First is looking to divest all or some of it's Devon and Cornwall operation. I wonder if there is any truth in that and would they just close it down or sell it?

First Devon & Cornwall is merging with First Hampshire & Dorset - announced yesterday

It seems that this is indeed now the case and that First Devon and Cornwall will indeed soon merge with Hampshire and Dorset under the control of Marc Reddy who is currently looking after D&C from his Hampshire base anyway. (Although it was last reported to staff that he was leaving D&C and just keeping H&D). It is clear that the company is going to be run from the Hampshire side and that will mean changes for Plymouth. In terms of bus operations it will be business as usual and passengers are unlikely to notice. The people most affected will be the clerical and admin staff at Plymouth. I don't know how many people will be 'at risk' at this moment in time but I am sure they will know they are at risk and that is not a pleasant feeling. As someone who is also in an area which faces massive changes which will result in job losses I can understand how you feel right now.

Dead Dart

The last few days have seen a couple of happy Darts appear on PT. Citybus number 45 seems happy enough to sport a big smile as Pippi Dart and of course 105 can now relax knowing she is in safe hands in preservation and will be able to stay in Plymouth while the other step entrance Darts should all be gone by early next year.
Well today we have a sad picture of the first of the step entrance Darts to depart from Plymouth. 108 is seen here at Milehouse on the 3rd March 2007 having had almost all usable parts stripped after accident damage.

Dennis Dart is no longer alone as his best friend Pippi is now out and about on the streets of Plymouth. Pippi, otherwise known as Number 45, is seen below on Royal Parade. She is of course sorry that she isn't in service, but she did go out in service shortly after I took the picture. I know Pippi is Dennis’ best friend but I am sure she is pretty quick to remind Dennis that she is low floor while he isn't! Plymouth Citybus 045 Y645NYD
Of course Dennis Dart himself will at some stage in the near future also magically become a low floor bus as the step entrance buses are all due for replacement over the coming months (more on this later). Not sure how they will explain that away - Dennis Dart hits puberty?

There will be fireworks – and not just in Mainstone

Having a bit of a catch up of news items from the last few days:
Andrew Wickham, managing director of the firm, now owned by transport giant Go-Ahead, told The Herald the 46/47 would be re-routed from September 5 to serve the stops once more. However, that means sacrificing the service's Mainstone link, he said, as the operator bids to overhaul its least popular routes.
Wendy Kendall, who helped organise a petition against the 45/A withdrawal, welcomed the decision but said residents would still be left in the lurch until September 5. The 59-year-old said: "What are we supposed to do in the meantime? "We're fearful about how to live without these services. "There are a large number of elderly and disabled people here, and they rely on them. They're a lifeline." Myrtle Mathys, 82, added: "It's going to be isolation for a lot of people until September. We will keep pushing Go-Ahead until then."
Mr Wickham said the 46/47 service would also be restored in Peter's Park Lane, Kings Tamerton, following similar concerns from passengers. Residents in Mainstone would still be able to catch the alternative number 15 service, he added, while those in Paradise Road would be left with the options of two stops in nearby Fore Street and Devonport Road. This is Plymouth
(Archive copy if link above does not work)

This gives a clue as to the changes due in September. It remains to be seen how the passengers of Mainstone react. I guess a lot depends on how long First stick around with the 15.

Additional evening services will operate at 15 minute intervals from the George, Milehouse and Coypool Park and Ride sites on both dates. Return journeys from Royal Parade will recommence once the Fireworks have finished. Fares will be as follows and apply to both adults and children for return and single journeys:
PR1 The George £2.50
PR1 Milehouse £2.50
PR2 Coypool £2.50
Holders of a Concessionary Bus Pass who present their pass may travel for free (pass must be presented on both journeys). Return tickets issued on PR1 and PR2 earlier in the day may also be used for return travel on these services. Please note: as Plymouth Argyle are playing at home on Tuesday 10 August parking facilities at Milehouse will not be available - however PR1 buses will still serve the stop on Outland Road.

I make no apologies for featuring K105SFJ again today as I promised Bobby that he would be in Plymothian Transit today as the proud part owner of K105SFJ! As you can see the bus has not changed that much since my photo back in 2006. It is planned to get the bus back into the livery carried when new with the black band above the windows. plymouth Citybus 105 K105SFJ (PCTPG) plymouth Citybus 105 K105SFJ (PCTPG)

It was good to finally catch up with many of the PCTPG (Plymouth City transport Preservation Group) and to hear about some of their future plans. You will be hearing a lot more about them over the coming months with some interesting projects in the pipeline.
I will be posting more photos from the bus rally on Sunday over the coming week. It was a classic rally again with fantastic weather which was welcome after last years yet rally. Well done to all the organisers for another great day.

Dart 105 into preservation

Plymouth Citybus 105 K105SFJ
I have just realised that I have not managed to get a photo of 105 since 2007, not sure how its managed to stay that elusive!
That is all about to change though as 105 has entered the growing collection of the Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group.
One of the PCTPG youngest members along with Chairman Ralph Deldridge struck a deal to buy Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Dart 105 K105 SFJ from Plymouth City Bus (Go-Ahead Group) and add her to the pool of preserved buses within the PCTPG.
This is the first Dennis Dart ex Plymouth to be added to preservation and she will be ready to appear at the Hoe rally today for the official addition to the group. She is one of the oldest Darts left though similar 107 is still in active service in the new livery the rest are out of use and 101/2 have been sold.

More cancellations posted on the VOSA site yesterday by Target Travel:
PH0006742/32 - Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Royal Parade, Plymouth and Hooe given service number 7D effective from 13-Sep-2010.
PH0006742/35 - Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Royal Parade, Plymouth and Chaddlewood given service number 19/19A effective from 13-Sep-2010.
PH0006742/37 - Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Royal Parade, Plymouth and Derriford Hospital given service number 10/10A effective from 13-Sep-2010.
PH0006742/38 - Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Bretonside Bus Station, Plymouth and Noss Mayo, Plymouth given service number 94 effective from 13-Sep-2010.
Now if these are genuine cancellations then it represents a massive cutback for Target Travel which seems unlikely. One possible explanation that has come up is that Target Travel may be switching to a different operators licence. All of these cancellations are under the licence of Robert Risk but there is also an operator licence for Dealtop (Plymouth) Ltd and it may be that the bus fleet is being transferred across to Dealtop rather than Robert Risk.
If this is the case then I would expect to see details appear on VOSA over the next few days. Watch this space!

It does not seem a good time to be a bus passenger in Plymouth with yet more cutbacks appearing on the horizon
This time its Target Travel who have registered a few route cancellations:

Full details of the current routes and their recent histories can be found on my Extra site:

It is early days and there may be more to these cancellations than meets the eye at the moment but if these are proper cancellations then expect a few angry passengers to get quite vocal - on the 52A at least!

CITYBUS bosses have backtracked on their decision to cut two evening routes from Derriford Hospital.
Plymouth Citybus 129 M129HOD
The 46A and 47A disappear altogether next week

Staff and visitors would have been left without a bus home after 7.20pm under the plans. Evening services on routes 46 and 47, which the firm says are making "very significant losses", were set to be scrapped from next Sunday, July 25. But Plymouth Citybus managers have now done a U-turn following complaints from passengers. A number 46, to the city centre, will leave the hospital at 8.21pm and the St Budeaux-bound service 47 will depart three minutes later. Mr Wickham said:

We are concerned about the very significant losses we are making on routes 46, 47 and other evening services. If we are to preserve jobs and resources we must ensure that a sustainable network of routes and timetable is able to meet the transport needs of more people in the region without running empty buses

The independent watchdog Passenger Focus asked more than 1,200 passengers in Plymouth what they thought about their bus services.

Overall satisfaction was 90 per cent with both First and Plymouth Citybus, but a significant minority were unhappy about value for money

It would be more interesting if they broke down the differences between the two companies, but overall a pretty good result, and a fair one too.

Annabel out and about this weekend

I mentioned a couple of days ago that Plymouth would be seeing an Atlantean out and about this weekend: Plymouth Citybus 168 TTT168X

It will hopefully be leaving town at about 14:15 ish and following the 46 route. I am hoping to join him so expect a few photos after the weekend.

Hello. I'm Michael, owner of TTT 168X or 'Annabel' as I like to call her!  I have had an interest in buses from an early age. I can recall riding round on Plymouth Citybus Leyland Atlanteans when they were in active service and I used to catch them going to and from school as well. I used to sit at the front and watch how the drivers used to change gear. Some were better than others!!.

The attraction to Atlanteans was the sound of that 0.680 engine especially when it was climbing up some of Plymouth's steep hills and I like the design of them too. I used to see an impressive line up of Atlanteans at Plymouth Citybus's depot at Milehouse

The simple approach pays off for Citybus

CITYBUS says passenger numbers have increased by 17 per cent since it simplified its routes between Plympton and the city centre.
PCB Leyland Atlantean AN 134 - Ply., Royal Parade - 1984 (1) ©Jos Van-Hemert. Leyland Atlantean 134 on Royal Parade back in 1984.

Plymouth Citybus revised bus services between Plymouth and Plympton on June 6 following consultations with Plympton Chamber of Commerce and Plymouth City Council. Managing director Andrew Wickham said Citybus' new owner Go Ahead invested £300,000 to simplify the "confusing" number of services into just three routes that offer frequent buses to and from Plympton, which is already paying off. Mr Wickham said: "We are confident that our 'keep it simple' approach will continue to encourage new bus users.
"Our aim is to work closer with those who represent employers and commuters to ensure that we can help to reduce parking and traffic congestion issues."
But despite insisting that it was increasing the amount of buses between Plymouth and Plympton, the company still faced criticism from some quarters. Many angry residents voiced their concerns over changes to services —while Plympton councillors called for talks with the bus company.

One of the routes that will disappear in a couple of weeks time, the 45A has just come in from Devonport/ Stoke and will soon head off towards Cattedown.

I am currently putting together a series of pages looking at the bus routes in Plymouth and have been starting off with thoese that are about to change on the 25th July. This is quite time consuming but will eventually build into a comprehensive look at all the routes in and around Plymouth and detail the changes over time.

CITY councillors called on bus companies to consult residents and the council when they plan to change their services. Plymouth City Council will write to Citybus and First asking them always to undertake meaningful discussions, in the wake of changes announced recently by Citybus. Councillor Patrick Nicholson (Con, Plympton St Mary) told yesterday's meeting of the full city council:

"Far more dialogue should take place than has happened this time. "If it does, we might have far better bus services than we do."

Councillor Terri Beer (Con, Plympton Erle) said she had taken the initiative in talking to Citybus about its planned changes. Councillor Glenn Jordan (Con, Plympton Chaddlewood) said the problem was that people were not using these bus services and councillors should be trying to encourage more people to use buses.

I will leave the X80/X81 to one side for now as this is not the most interesting change. The really interesting changes are to the Ugobus services in Plymouth. 13 and 17 cancelled! is this the beginning of the end of full on competition against Citybus? Does this mean that Citybus have won?
It seems the Plympton service 12 is to continue but the route is to change. This could be interesting, I guess we will have to wait and see what First are doing with this route. I am glad to see the 15 remains unchanged apart from a timetable change. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sunday service cut back to hourly rather than every 30 mins but hopefully the changes will be fairly minor. The big question is, if First are loosing interest in their Plymouth ugobus network, how long before the next set of cutbacks?

A quick look back on the VOSA web site over the past few weeks to see what changes the local bus companies have in store for us in Plymouth:
First 40956 S344SUX
40956 seen on the 3 back in January, just one of the services changing in July.

On the 18th June we get

PH1064253/1 - KEY CABS LTD T/A TAXIFAST, FARADAY MILL BUSINESS PARK, ELLIOTT ROAD, PLYMOUTH, PL4 0ST Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth, St. Budeaux Square and Plymouth, St. Budeaux Square given service number 222 effective from 06-Aug-2010.

PH1064253/2 - KEY CABS LTD T/A TAXIFAST, FARADAY MILL BUSINESS PARK, ELLIOTT ROAD, PLYMOUTH, PL4 0ST Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth, St. Budeaux Square and Plymouth, St. Budeaux Square given service number 223 effective from 06-Aug-2010.
These are the taxibus services which are coming off. I am suprised to see only the St Budeaux services have appeared here so far, as the Northern Connect services are also stopping from the same date. No doubt these will appear before too long.

Step forward a week to the 25th June and we get a batch from First:

PH0004983/35 - FIRST DEVON & CORNWALL LTD, THE RIDE, CHELSON MEADOW, PLYMOUTH, PL9 7JT Variation Accepted: Operating between TORPOINT FERRY and PLYMOUTH Bus Station given service number 81/81C effective from 25-Jul-2010. To amend Timetable.

PH0004983/330 - FIRST DEVON & CORNWALL LTD, THE RIDE, CHELSON MEADOW, PLYMOUTH, PL9 7JT Variation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Royal Parade and Goodewell given service number 6 effective from 25-Jul-2010. To amend Timetable.

PH0004983/336 - FIRST DEVON & CORNWALL LTD, THE RIDE, CHELSON MEADOW, PLYMOUTH, PL9 7JT Variation Accepted: Operating between Plymouth Royal Parade and Barne Barton given service number 3 effective from 25-Jul-2010. To amend Timetable.

PH0004983/395 - FIRST DEVON & CORNWALL LTD, THE RIDE, CHELSON MEADOW, PLYMOUTH, PL9 7JT Variation Accepted: Operating between City Centre and City Centre given service number 13 effective from 25-Jul-2010. To amend Timetable.

It is good to see that these changes are all down for the same date as the next Citybus changes. Coincidentally the date of the WNPG Rally on The Hoe. I will be looking more closely at these changes, over the course of the next week or so.
Finally we get one registration variation recorded on the 2nd July:

PH0000135/13 - PLYMOUTH CITYBUS LTD, MILEHOUSE, MILEHOUSE ROAD, PLYMOUTH, PL3 4AA Variation Accepted by SN: Operating between PLYMOUTH Royal Parade and DERRIFORD Hospital given service number 50 effective from 25-Jul-2010. The Citybus workshop staff have been busy putting the Volvo B7Ls into service over the last few months, all of which have been repainted and tided up internally before being placed into service. The latest one to be sorted out is 401

As well as having the advert wrap applied for Radio Plymouth (well timed seeing as 'heart' have finally all but finished off the old Plymouth Sound station) this bus is the first one to have the centre exit door to be removed. Looks good and I am sure will provide useful extra seating capacity on these fine buses. Its also nice to see an advert that does not cover up all the windows.

The Citybus fleet gets a little less standardised with the arrival of three Dennis Darts from Oxford :

A few people have reported a small batch of Volvos at Milehouse, but they are in fact Dennis Darts with Wright dual door bodywork which have been transferred to Citybus from City of Oxford. All three will be repainted and tidied up internally before entry into service which will hopefully be in about a months time.

Work to improve traffic flow on and around Manadon roundabout is set to start on Monday 12 July.

The work forms part of the ongoing transport improvement package for the Northern Corridor (the main route from Woolwell into the city centre) and aims to reduce queuing and congestion on all approaches to the roundabout, including the A38 slip roads. The improvements, which have been developed in consultation with the Highways Agency, will include a more responsive and energy-efficient traffic light system, new lane designations, clearer signage and the repainting of white lines and road markings around the roundabout and on approach roads. New traffic lights will be installed at the Outland Road entry to the roundabout, to reduce queuing and the existing traffic lights on the roundabout and at the Kneele Gardens junction on Mannamead Road will be upgraded. The new traffic light system will be more responsive to varying traffic flows, helping to ease congestion and queuing at peak times. It will also reduce power consumption by around 65 to 75 per cent and reduce carbon dioxide output, yearly maintenance costs and waste disposal of lamps. The main works are expected to last for 13 weeks but will be undertaken mainly at night to minimise disruption to traffic.
Councillor Kevin Wigens, Cabinet Member for Transport said: "Manadon roundabout is a very busy interchange for traffic using both the Northern Corridor and the A38. These improvements should help to reduce queuing and congestion, meaning faster and more reliable journey times for bus passengers and for motorists, as well as significantly reduce our energy use and maintenance costs.”
The Manadon roundabout improvement works are being carried out by Plymouth Transport and Highways, the partnership between Plymouth City Council and Amey. The Council is encouraging people to use public transport, including Park and Ride buses from the George Junction. Tavistock Junction

I never did see a train pass over this level crossing myself, so I am more than happy to find this video of loco 09101 at Tavistock Junction 13 May 2008. Its quite old and YouTube often compress the life out of videos but i think its still worth seeing, if you like me have never witnessed this. (I have seen trains on this stretch, but always just missed them crossing the roads!
