Service update: #PCB11A due to an RTA in Padstow the 1530 service is currently stuck in Padstow Station Road unable to move buses are terminating at the Park and Ride until further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience.

If you're heading to Falmouth for the Carnival Parade tomorrow, Road closures affecting The Moor and Killigrew St are in force from 1800 to 2030. All services starting from the 1800 U2 will pick up and drop off from Dracena Cross, back to normal stops for the 2052 U1 (AW)

PCTPG News

Running Days

Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group (PCTPG ) in association with the Plym Valley Railway  (PVR) are pleased to announce that they have already had their most successful December running days to date.

The Atlantean themed running days held on the 4 Sundays prior to Christmas 2014 have seen ridership on the 51 Coypool to City Centre Park and Ride service increase on previous years events. Ridership too on the PVR North Pole Express has also been at record levels for the event. The group have also had their most successful PVR sales bus takings this year so far. All of which will go into the future restoration work required on the various buses within the collection to keep them on the road or in some cases to return them to the road.

The group is open to all regardless of age and ability and is especially welcoming of family memberships.

Ralph Delbridge Group Chairman said; "We are also in the process of updating our facility at Colebrook including setting up an archive that will be open to the public. Anyone with any items of Plymouth area public transport history including badges, uniform, photographs etc. would be more than welcome to get in touch with us."

He added "PCTPG has had its most successful year so far in 2014 with significant historic vehicle acquisitions and a growth in membership numbers at a time when people don't have a lot of spare capital. We look forward to continuing that success in 2015 and getting to as many shows and events across the South West and further afield as possible and look forward to meeting preservationists from other groups to share experiences and further the bus preservation movement we all enjoy.

Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group (PCTPG) are pleased to announce the successful acquisition of another former Plymouth bus for on going preservation in the City as part of the groups collection.

Group Member Mike Bojanitz has secured former Plymouth Corporation Leyland PD1 Half Cab 89 CJY 299 which has been out of the city for nearly 10 years stored by another preservationist and returned her to the groups Colebrook depot facility this week.

This is the third significant half cab return to the city by members of the PCTPG this year. In July in time for the Hoe rally Leyland PD2 102 OCO502 was returned to Plymouth. In November the group successfully repatriated rare low height Crossley DD42 335 DJY965 and now in December we had made it a hat trick with the successful return of 89 CJY299.

Mike Bojanitz said "Work is already underway on cleaning her and stripping down the old paint work in order to return her to her former glory, she has also come with a full set of re trimmed seats which will go some way to helping with the restoration."

In line with the PCTPG's aim of a collection reflecting a true cross section of the vehicles and liveries seen on the City streets across all eras and decades we are pleased to announce a further acquisition for the groups collection this week.

Group member Tom Pearce has secured one of the few surviving former Western National step entrance Dennis Dart Plaxton Pointers. Currently only one other is in preservation. Tom has acquired from the bus from Target Travel of Plymouth who have operated it for a number of years as part of there fleet. Most recently however it has been used as a source of spare parts to keep the other two remaining Plaxton Pointers in there fleet going.

Tom said "I hope to return it to the badgers and flags livery it had when new and have it out and about for the 2015 season starting with Penzance. I have already secured a new engine for it from a similar donor vehicle."

The purchase will go some way to balancing out the PCTPG collection with a mix of vehicles of other operators from within the City. The group recently added Olympian ECW C412HJN to its collection despite being new to Eastern National it ran within First group from Torpoint depot for the final few years of its First service life.

an important message from our friends at the PCTPG regarding the Plym Valley Park & Ride:

I have been requested by the PVR to amend our timetable, previously published, to enable us to pick up passengers from the City Centre in order to arrive in time for the PVR’s midday departure.  Please will you publish this amended version with our, PCTPG, apologies but for PVR’s operational reasons this late change has been published.

Sunday Shopping Buses and Trains

The Plym Valley Railway Special free bus timetable runs every Sunday up till Christmas.

“Park for free every Sunday leading up to Christmas at the Coypool Park & Ride and travel free to do some shopping, leaving the children with Dad (or Mum!) or the Grandparents to see Santa and ride on the steam railway whilst you grab a few hours to enjoy the festive cheer of the City Centre shops. Return Bus departs from the centre of Royal Parade near Savers or on the Viaduct near Primark”

Plym Valley and PCT PG

RAIL passengers rolled back the clock when they stepped aboard a train to mark the reopening of a branch line. Aubrey Hawke and Bernard Mills were among those on the last train to use the old branch line between Plymouth, Tavistock and Launceston 50 years ago.

Fifty years ago Mr Hawke was the last passenger to board the line, which was severed by Dr Beeching's axe and closed earlier than planned because of winter snow. Bernard Mills, a photographer and founder-member of the Plym Valley Railway, was also on the last train 50 years ago and on the first train.

The railway will open to visitors on certain Sundays from 11am, starting from Easter Sunday.

458 has had a bit of a makeover this past week and it is hoped that it will have its name reapplied in time for Sunday. A full repaint into yellow will be taking place over the winter months.

Plym Valley Mince Pie Specials are back!
Sunday 5th, 12th and 19th December. As usual the Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group will be running a free shuttle service for the event. Timetable below.

Sorry for the break since last post- I just needed a break!

TfL and its predecessor realised that it was beneficial to paint all its franchised buses back into the familiar. A decade after the introduction of colour came a return to red Omnibuses

service 40 (Threemilestone to Camborne) ceased operation today after many years with the company. PTOTPA

It's still a work in progress, but my plan is to travel along every stretch of the Tube network, operated by passenger carrying trains. I've done a fair bit, but there are still a number of extremities that need covering A Transport of Delight

New York's latest sightseeing offering is a fleet of coaches all specified (at what is quoted as $1.3m each) for a brand new visitor experience Leon Daniels

Now that civil servants and politicians can no longer use first class, and businesses are cutting back, it is high time that the whole issue was re-examined. While having two classes may be a way for the operators to screw extra money out of their punters, if overcrowding is such a big issue as is claimed, then surely cutting first class is a no brainer Christan Wolmer

Sorry but this event has kind of escaped my attention as it clashes with the Kingsbridge event and also the Exeter Westpoint rally on Sunday but a quick reminder that the Plym Valley Railway are holding their Transport Weekend event this weekend - so there is still time to pop down on Sunday!

Mince Pie Specials on the Plym Valley Railway

Mince Pie Specials are back

The Plym Valley Railway are running their Mince Pie Specials again this Christmas with a shuttle service from the City Centre provided by the Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group. They actually started this Sunday just gone (sorry didn't get the planned notice up in time due to the computer issues). There are still two remaining dates - the next two Sundays 13th and 20th December. The price seems to be either £4 adult £2 child or possibly £4.50 and £2.50 as their we site contradicts itself - either way its worth it and does help support the operations in the valley. Buses will operate between: Plymouth Railway Station Bus Stop,Drakes Circus and Marsh Mills Station PVR Depart Drakes Circus Plymouth Railway Station (Arr) Plymouth Railway Station (Depart) Drake Circus (Police Station) PVR Arrive 12:45 12:57 13:00 13:05 13:07 13:20 13:30 13:42 13:45 13:50 13:52 14:04 14:15 14:27 14:30 14:35 14;37 14:49 15:00 15:12 15:15 15:20 15:22 15:34 16:30 16:42 16:45       Plym Valley Railway and Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group reserve  the right to refuse travel and cannot accept responsibility for variations in the timetable owing to circumstances beyond their control.   It is planned to operate the shuttles with 201 and 131 on alternate Sundays - not sure which one will be used this coming weekend.

Plym Valley Transport Weekend

"Trains will depart from Marsh Mills every 30 minutes”

As well as exhibiting on the site we are also providing a free shuttle service into the City (Open to all not just PVR visitors). Trains will depart from Marsh Mills every 30 minutes from 1300 until 1600 on both days. Fares:- Adults £2.50 and Children £1. Over this special weekend, apart from the return train rides from Marsh Mills Station to Lee Moor Crossing, a trip of nearly a mile and a half, we hope to have the following attractions: Vintage cars and bikes Fairground attractions Stationary Engines Miniature Railway If anyone owns a classic car / motorcycle / stationary engine / classic commercial / classic military vehicle and would like to attend on the Sunday and exhibit in the tarmac’d car-park please let our secretary know: enquiries@plymouthcitytransport.co.uk and we will update the Plym Valley Railway.
