There in a Flash!

I have been experimenting with different ways to view bus routes using Google Earth and have finally produced a video which I think does give a good impression of a route, in this case, my local bus - the Plymouth Citybus 50, Yellow Flash.
We start at Derriford and go on an extremely fast trip around the city (172mph!) arriving back at Derriford 6 minutes later…
I think I might just slow it down a bit next time but otherwise I am happy with it so far. If it does not work directly on the blog you might get a better view of the video here on You Tube where you can get a better larger view.

The route itself falls from 450 feet above sea level just above Derriford Hospital to a mere 10 feet above sea level on The Embankment, with a few fairly steep climbs along the way as can be seen in this route profile which is another handy tool on GE.
profile 50
All in all I think the advances that Google have made in the 3D rendering of their Earth maps has made these 3d views a lot better than they used to be, and more importantly a lot easier / faster to to produce than ever before. Hopefully more of these will follow in due course

In The News

RESIDENTS from Brushford and Dulverton took advantage of another special trip on the new Exmoor Community Bus. The trip to Bideford on Wednesday, May 11, was hailed a great success and enjoyed by members of the newly formed Exmoor Community Bus Club. The Exmoor Community Bus Association is run by volunteers and they would be pleased to welcome any new volunteers who are able to help with the production of regular newsletters or with being a trip companion to assist the more frail passengers enjoy their journey, by walking around with them having a coffee and chat.

Stagecoach South West will be running a further surgery event in North Devon to garner feedback on its bus network. It follows similar events in East-the-Water, Bideford and Appledore, which were organised after residents complained and put together petitions following changes to bus routes announced earlier this year. The surgery will take place at Barnstaple Guildhall on Tuesday, May 17 and will run from 10am to 2pm.

Repaints into KERNOW (Olympia) livery include 69229 69230 32802 53040 69224 42871

Mercedes coach 56000 now carries registration W146RCU

Devon fleet

The planned dispersal of the Devon fleet was as follows:

8 dda deckers and 4 B7 singles are on hire to Stagecoach until Next year
4 non dda Darts are on short term loan to Stagecoach
3 B7 singles are in First South West reserve
All other dda deckers have been moved to Kernow for preparation for service
The 6 dda solos and darts have moved to Kernow for preparation for service
Three non dda solos are temporarily with BoS to cover other vehicle movements
Another B6 and a B10B have gone to Taunton for breaking
One B6 and the Kreg Olympian have been sold for preservation
The remaining non dda single deck fleet and the T reg Olympian have been moved to Cornwall for onward disposal
Three non dda darts, one non dda B10B and a coach are at The Ride awaiting collection for scrap.
And finally the four South a Devon vans have gone to Cornwall.

32756 has already received the full KERNOW treatment and looks very smart as has 33176

Torpoint

Topoint is now being used to store redundant buses, mostly from the Kernow fleet prior to disposal. Buses noted there so far include 34063 34064 34192 34193 34194 34196 34197 34199 34200 34259 34261 42841 48264. These include the former Airbus fleet of Olympians which will be missed by many people! The fleet have now officially been re-registered back to their original N registrations although most still carry their non-dating plates. I would imagine that their numbers will reappear on other buses some time soon.

Much of this information has come from contributors to the RailUKForums First Kernow discussion board.

Taking (Plym)stock

With several changes over the coming months Plymstock services are under the spotlight today. The current Plymstock route for Plymouth Citybus is the 5 5A which provides a basic 10 minute daily service from town alternating directions around the Plymstock loop. Evenings and Sundays are provided with a bus every 30 mins.Plymstock - Plymouth Citybus Sep 2013

First Devon & Cornwall have several routes at the moment covering a larger area of Plymstock as shown below:

Plymstock - First Sep 2013
The main route is the 2 (yellow above) which operates a basic day time service every 12 minutes (10 mins at peak times). Evenings the service dips down to hourly. Sundays sees a half hourly service in the day time with an hourly Sunday evening service.

Next we have the 6 Dark blue above which shares a small section with the 2 but also serves Oreston and then into Elburton and Staddiscombe on a 20 minute frequency with the last bus back into town just after 9pm. A half hourly Sunday day time service is also provided. As can be seen there is a substantial overlap with the Plymouth Citybus 5 5A!

We then have the 7 (brown above – although most of it is hidden!) This comes up through Plymstock to Broadway, Dunstone View then down to Elburton and return in a one way loop. A basic half hour day time service with a Sunday bus every hour. No evenings.

Also shown above is the 48 in light blue with a few journeys pretty much covered by the 7 then splitting off  up through Wembury Road to Wembury. We also have the 93 with a bus every hour (black above) through Pomphlett Road and Stanborough Road on its way to Kingsbridge.

So what happens next?

27th October sees some drastic changes by First:

Service 2 (City Centre - Mount Batten): The frequency of buses on this route is being improved from the end of October. From this date buses will run every 10 minutes Monday - Saturday (compared to every 12 minutes at present) meaning customers will have more opportunities to travel. In addition to this the route that Service 2 buses take is being amended slightly. From the end of October buses between Plymstock Broadway and Pomphlett Roundabout will follow alternate routes every other journey, with one travelling via Pomphlett Gardens and the next travelling via Oreston. These changes mean that despite the loss of the old Service 6 (see details below), people travelling to and from Oreston will still have access to a bus every 20 minutes during the day Monday - Saturday. Similarly they will also regain an evening service from the end of October. Additionally, most journeys on Service 2 will continue from Royal Parade as Service 3, thus providing links from Plymstock to Devonport and St Budeaux

The 2 is shown below in yellow with the additional section through Oreston shown.

Plymstock - First Oct 2013

OLD Service 6 (City Centre - Staddiscombe): The existing Service 6 bus route is being withdrawn but a new Service 6 is being created at the same time (see details below). People who used the old service 6 will find that part of the previous route - that which runs between the city centre and Plymstock Broadway - will be covered by the revised Service 2 (see details above). People wishing to travel further into Staddiscombe will find that alternative services do exist.
Service 7 (City Centre - Elburton): We regret that this route - which has under performed for a number of years - is being withdrawn from the end of October. People wishing to travel to and from Elburton, Plymstock and the City Centre will however still be able to use our improved Service 93 (Plymouth - Dartmouth) to make local journeys.

Service 93 (Plymouth - Kingsbridge - Dartmouth): The timetable of this service is being amended to provide some additional short journeys running between Elburton (Elburton School) and the City Centre, to provide a bus every half hour This change is being made to compensate for the loss of Service 7 journeys. The longer journeys between Plymouth and Dartmouth are unaffected and remain as they are. From the end of October Service 93 buses will depart from Royal Parade (Stop A8), sharing the stop with Service 2 - which means that buses travelling the same direction will leave from the same place.

The 93 remains in black above with a bus every half hour.

It has to be said that this is quite a reduction in service for some areas of Plymstock although Citybus do have much of this covered. Speaking of which…

3rd November we see a new route:

Service 14 which is to operate hourly Monday to Saturday between Plympton, Plymstock, City Centre, Devonport, Ham, Derriford Hospital and Tamar Science Park. This new service is brought to you thanks to funding from Plymouth City Council.

Plymstock - Plymouth Citybus Nov 2013

The new hourly 14 shown above in orange adds few extra sections of route to the current coverage provided by the 5 5A (red).

But the changes are not over yet as we recently had a big announcement by Citybus regarding the 5 5A:

The new route, which will be named the 5 and 5A will run up to every 10 minutes between Plymstock Fire Station and Saltash Oaklands Drive, via the City Centre.

Saltash will not only benefit from increased Monday to Saturday daytime frequency but also an up to every 30 minutes service Monday to Saturday evenings and Sundays. At Oaklands Drive the 5 will operate clockwise around Latchbrook, with the 5A running anti clockwise around the same route, so every bus stop will be served.

In Plymstock both services will run a new route direct via Pomphlett Road to the fire station where the 5 will now operate via Dolphin Court and Stanborough continuing on its current route to Elburton and Staddiscombe. The the 5A will operate via Goosewell Road and continue to Holmwood and Staddiscombe on its current route.

So the map below shows the Citybus network from the 1st December when the 5 5A is rerouted as shown in red with the 14 shown in orange still..

We now see that the 14 route through Plymstock now duplicates much of the new 5 5A with several areas no longer served by Citybus including Billacombe Road which is now devoid of any service. Oreston sees a general reduction in  service from First and looses Citybus.

Plymstock - Plymouth Citybus Dec 2013

I can see that the new 5 5A makes sense to Citybus as there are a lot more passengers to be had going through Pomphlett Road but a fair few passengers will be upset. Perhaps the 14 could be re-routed to provide at least some cover?

Public Transport Experience: Its design is not very good. No, its design is utterly appalling, unnecessarily complicated and unpleasantly confusing to an innocent bus user.

Public Transport Experience: it is all indicative of information provided by people who don't know what they are talking, programing or postering about; people who don't use the bus station and therefore don't realise what daftness they have created.

Andys Bus Blog: One of our regular contributors Philip Slynn visited the West Of England Transport Collection (WETC) annual open day in Winkleigh, Devon on Sunday 6th October 2013

Public Transport Experience: one (mature) lady summarised the views of the "not 'appy 'ere" brigade. "We didn't want it; but now we've got it I suppose we'd better use it." Certainly the Luton Busway has been greeted with less enthusiasm in the local media than the earlier Cambridge effort.

Andys Bus Blog: in this two part report we will be taking a look at some of the buses that are included in this fascinating collection...

First Plymouth Map

When it come to promoting their services both main companies in Plymouth have their strengths and weaknesses. One thing that I feel First Devon & Cornwall generally do well is their maps. They have just released their latest Plymouth network for the end of October:

First Plymouth new map October 2013

Its best viewed in full size obviously!

I much prefer this style of map without too many different colours, although, to be fair to Plymouth Citybus, it is probably slightly easier for First having less routes in Plymouth. I will be having a look at other publicity items put out by the companies for the new networks over the coming weeks, but this is a positive start!

Public Transport Experience: During the £500,000 scheme the water company will be upgrading 1,025 metres of old three-inch concrete water mains to address the issue of frequent bursts in the area.

Random Streets: Houghton-le-Spring a small and historic town in North East England, believed to have been founded in the 12th Century.

Omnibuses2.0: Jubilation

Considering that Plymothian Transit aims to cover all forms of transportation in and around Plymouth, and that Plymouth is well known for being a major port, I very rarely mention sea traffic. Well, today I cam across an interesting site which provides live mapping of marine traffic. sure how much traffic it actually covers but the ships and boats it does find are plotted on the map, and when you click on the marker it gives you the information it has on that vessel. It a large number of cases it also gives you a photo too. Marinetraffic.com

Urban Tick

plymouth365_24h_sun from urbanTick on Vimeo.
Plymouth city centre is a very specific area. It has a very distinct character arising from the strong postwar design by Patrick Abercrombie. It has a truly mono functional use, it is a shopping centre in the most literal sense of the word possible. There are no offices, no restaurants, no pubs or bars, no housing, just shops and on the first or second floors storage space for the shops. Link
This is a line lifted from UrbanTick which is a personal blog from someone undergoing a PhD at UCL. As part of his work he has tracked his movements across the City of Plymouth and mapped them. A few of these are captured in video over 24 hours of all movements over 365 days. This particular video shows the movements by hours of daylight (winter).
The whole project is fascinating, and quite detailed and complicated so you really need to pop over to his blog UrbanTick to have a good read to make more sense of it all. You can see the beginning of some very useful tools for transport planning developing here.

23 October 2008

Oh what a circus!

Citybus are changing the route into the City centre for some of their routes as from 23rd November.

Why the changes?

Plymouth Citybus experienced a period of very poor performance during the run up to Christmas 2007. This was caused by traffic congestion at Charles Church and Drake Circus in addition to other locations where congestion was and continues to be problematic including Derriford around the George junction interchange, Prince Rock, the top of Victoria Road at the junction with the A38 slip road, Manadon roundabout, Peverell junctions, Stoke Village and Transit Way.

This year in addition to those busy areas, traffic will be under severe pressure in Devonport due to extensive gas works

Although Plymouth City Council have made some improvements to Charles Cross roundabout, which has improved the flow of public transport around Charles Church we continue to work closely with the hard working Public Transport team at Plymouth City Council to find solutions to the other congestion areas in the city.
We hope that funding will be approved for the Prince Rock road improvements scheme, which if successfully delivered should see a substantial improvement in public transport operations.

However, the situation at the junction with Drake Circus and North Hill is now very serious. We continue to experience considerable delays to bus services on approach to the City Centre and on a large number of occasions have diverted services away from Drake Circus.

We understand that these changes implemented will cause some inconvenience. We apologise profusely but believe that if these alterations are not made it will be almost impossible to avoid a repeat of last years poor performance.

Over the Christmas period Plymouth Citybus will be conducting an extensive analysis to ascertain if our customers would wish the above services to return to the pre November 23rd operations when City Centre congestion levels have eased.

Plymouth Citybus would therefore welcome any comments in respect of the changes. Comments can be sent either by email to peter.oliver@plymouthbus.co.uk, or by post to: Peter Oliver, Commercial Manager, Plymouth Citybus, Milehouse, Plymouth. PL3 4AA.

Whilst we will be unable to respond to every letter and email we give a commitment that the comments received during the period of our analysis will be key factors when decisions are reached as to which services will return to pre 23rd November operations once traffic congestion around Drake Circus has been reduced.

Once again, Plymouth Citybus apologies for any inconvenience experienced and can only reiterate that these changes are what we feel, to be in the interest of our passengers.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our passengers and will be grateful for your response to our actions. All comments will be used to assist in our route analysis after the holiday period.

What changes?

Last Christmas due to the immense success of the Drake Circus Shopping Mall Plymouth Citybus experienced severe operational difficulties. This was due to the natural increase in traffic and pedestrian flow in the vicinity of the precinct. On analysis, in order to avoid a repeat and in the interest of our passengers we have decided to implement the following changes to our network from the 23rd November 2008:

Service 23/D and Service 24.

To change the inbound route of these services from Charles Cross roundabout to operate direct via Exeter Street Viaduct to Royal Parade using Derry’s Cross as the bus turn around point.

Inbound services withdrawn from Charles Street, Mayflower Street, Western Approach and Union Street

To change the outbound route of these services to operate from Exeter Street Viaduct via

Charles Cross roundabout and Ebrington Street to Tothill Road as opposed to Exeter Street and Cattedown roundabout to Tothill Road.

Outbound services withdrawn from Exeter Street

I am very impressed with Citybus for getting this information out in plenty of time and with such a detailed explanation why the changes are being made. Certainly anybody who has been into the City Centre knows the problems with traffic in the Drake Circus area. The maps shown above are being printed and will be displayed in bus stops all across the City which should help save any confusion although I believe that some of these re-routings already happen at times of severe congestion so many passengers will be aware of the routes already. The maps are nice and clear and easy to understand too which is always a bonus.
From a personal view point I prefer the new route of the 50 into town as most of the time Bretonside is my first port of call but I am probably not your average passenger! If it works and saves time and helps the buses keep closer to their timetables then it all has to be a good idea. Note that not all Citybus routes are being altered yet, I guess this is just hoping that a reduced number of buses in the area might help the remaining services get through?

Mapping the past in the present day

I am constantly on the look out for new tools on the Internet to use for research and just general mucking about. One such service I have come across is Where is the path, which gives you various images from 'today' alongside old OS maps.
This is the effect you get when looking at an area based on Milehouse:

On the left we see the old OS map which can be zoomed in and out, although the quality suffers on some maps when you zoom in too much, and on the right we see the present day image. In this case I am using OS satellite imagery. You can also see the same areas in Google Earth (if you have the plug in installed) of plain Google Maps or satellite image, or a few other maps. The blue square on the left is the area covered by the image on the right and also the blue cross hatch matches where you place your cursor on the new image. This is useful when tracking old lanes against the modern landscape.

Thanks to the less than helpful attitude of OS there is a strict limit to the number of times the service can be called upon during the day, but other than that this is a great way of discovering the past by looking on the Internet. If this is what can be put together by one individual working within the confines of extremely limiting constraints, you can only begin to imagine what OS could do if they put their minds to it, or if they just allowed people better access to the information, which lets not forget, has been paid for by taxpayers over the years!

Plymothian Transit Blog Map

I have now plotted most of my blog posts onto a Google Map so you can see specific posts from any of the locations shown. Most of them so far are camera icons where you can click on the camera and see a listing of posts with photos from that location. There is still plenty to add to the map, I am only up to the end of 2006 so far - 18 months to go! Use the zoom buttons top left and click and drag the map to the areas you are interested in. For a larger view click the blue text bottom left under the map which will take you to the Google Maps page. Eventually I will be adding a lot more than just photo links - but all this takes time!
