A few bits of note as I have been updating fleet lists over the last day or so

Plymouth Citybus has seen the departure unused of the Volvo double deckers back to East Yorkshire.

Note that they have been numbered after the other Scanias and not in the 1000’s which suggests these are staying around a bit longer?

I have not seen any reports of them being used here yet.

Torridge Grows

Its always nice to see one of the local haulage operators doing well as we have seen quite a few fleets fail over the years I have been running this blog.
Devon haulier Torridge Transport is extending its services to handle pallet deliveries in 2011 when it joins United Pallet Network (UPN).
The South Molton-based business will begin covering parts of Exeter and Taunton for the network from February next year. It is the firm's first time in a pallet network.
Brian Cobbledick, MD at Torridge Transport, says: "We have been thinking about joining a network for a while, and from 2011, our transport and storage customers can have a far greater choice when it comes to pallet deliveries. We also expect to win new clients."
The business expects to take delivery of some new trucks to join the 35-strong fleet and recruit employees to cope with a rise in volumes.

While travelling between sites yesterday lunchtime (weather not as bad as feared) the Radio Four programme Call You & Yours was receiving “advice” and comment from its listeners on how to cope with the British weather and how badly we seem to manage. Poor Iris from near Billericay was one of them Omnibuses

Not a brilliant shot, but included here as its my first 09 registration I have for Devon based Evans Transport. WA09AZU is a new Scania R480. This has to be one of my favourite local haulage fleets thanks to its distinctive livery. WA56KTN is a MAN TGA which does seem to be a favoured model in the fleet. The last of my photos of this fleet, all taken yesterday, is DAF XF WA06LVD.

A2Z Aggregates and Minerals

Aggregates and Minerals Ltd is the latest fleet to get its own page entry in my On the Road A2Z of Plymouth. (no longer available!)

Based in Cornwall this is a smart fleet in this simple but smart pale blue livery.

The Sevens Part 1

The first in an occasional series of 07 registered vehicles to be seen on the streets of Plymouth.
I first saw this very smart Ford Transit Connect van a couple of weeks ago but was unable to get a photo. To my suprise it now seems to park just outside my house. Honors Flowers is the company.

Vallance of South Devon are regular visitors with a very well presented tidy fleet. The livery of white with a red fleetname will hardly set the world alight but they are always clean and smart. I always like a fleet with nice clear fleet numbers as well - just a personal preference as an anorak!

Fifty Sixers Part 1

It seems quite a few local fleets have been buying new vehicles recently. So I thought I would start a quick 'mini series' of some of then new '56' registrations that are regularly seen on the streets of plymouth.
PM Clarke is a Devon based Tanker fleet with a simple blue and white livery - but always immaculate.

Stormseal

Stormseal have had a Plymouth Citybus Dart in all over wrap-around advertising livery for quite some time now. I have been sorting through the many thousands of photos I have waiting to be looked at and came across this LDV Convoy van in Stormseal livery. It is just one of the many local vehicles which can be found on my Flickr 'Local fleets' set.

Eggbeers Transport

The next in my occasional series on local haulage companies is Eggbeers Transport. Bsed in Newton Abbott they are regular visitors to Plymouth. The fleet of about twelve vehicles is actually now owned by M.Way and Sons who have already featured in this series. An older photo of another member of the Eggbeer fleet can be found here.

Handside

Handside operate a small but very smart fleet of bright orange tippers which seem to be kept very busy! If you spend more than half an hour down at Marsh Mills you are bound to see one or two of their mostly DAF fleet. MX06FVW is one of the newest members of the fleet.

Coastal-Waste

Coastal waste DAF bulk waste unit seen on the Embankment in August on its way the Chelson Meadow Refuse tip.

I have often spent hours standing at the main entrace to the tip taking photographs of the trucks coming in and out (it is also the main entrance to First Devon and Cornwalls depot) and was not looking forward to the tip being closed in March next year.
Now tonight comes news that the tip will notbe closing quite as soon as that. The landfill site, which takes most of the city's household and business waste, was due to close in March next year. But the Environment Agency (EA) has now told the city council it can keep the site open until March 2008 - after European landfill laws were reinterpreted by the Government.
A big relief for the City Council as it gives them more time to sort out what to do with our refuse and a big relief for me too!

I spent the most of this morning down on the Embankment taking photographs of buses, lorries and vans - over 300 photos taken in all. Some of these will appear over the next week or so...

Local Fleets - Severnside

Severnside has vastly improved its fleet over the years I have been observing them. Mainly due to the fact that they are now on contract hire from Ryder and are all all fairly new. They used to be a dull red livery but this nice green makes them stand out from other fleets. Typical of the Severnside operation in Plymouth is this DAF bulk waste unit

Local removal and haulage company based on Embankment Road, Plymouth. not that far from where this picture was taken. There is something reassuringly old fasioned about the livery!

Local fleets - Aggregates and Minerals Ltd

I have negelected the local haulage scene a bit so I hope to start making up for it over the next few weeks.

Aggregates and Minerals Ltd is a leading supplier of aggregates and waste disposal services in Cornwall, employing 53 people. The company has grown rapidly in recent years and has an HGV fleet which numbers 30. Main customers are in the construction industry where a requirement exists to not only supply stone but also to remove unwanted inert waste to landfill sites.

Hot Stuff!

A new kind of private hire vehicle now available in Plymouth is this fire engine from Hot Stuff Limos. An ex London Fire Brigade Dodge appliance. I am fairly sure that there are a couple of similar engines available although their web site says they have only one. Perhaps there is another company out there as well!

May Gurney?

I have been puzzled by the ownership of a sizeable fleet of new vans which have been appearing in Plymouth recently - mostly large white high roofed vans like this one. I am now fairly certain that they belong to May Gurney - who recently have taken over TJ Brent. I know that they were looking at rebranding the fleet into a new livery of white with orange/ yellow logos. I am sure that these vans will soon gain the new logos. Of course I could end up being wrong!
