Citybus Take on Some Oakleys routes

More news on the services being taken over by Citybus from Oakleys:

From Monday 15th August, we’ll be running bus services 55, 56 and 98 between Tavistock and Yelverton, plus an extended Service 59 from Derriford Hospital covering Roborough and Shaugh Prior.

The routes were put out to tender by Devon County Council, and we won the contract to run the services.

Dartmoor Weekly

We’ve added some minibuses to our fleet especially for Services 55, 56 and 98 to make it easier to navigate the Dartmoor roads – the minibuses are better suited for the smaller roads to some of the more rural locations.

We’re also introducing a new Dartmoor Weekly ticket. This means it’ll be £15 for an adult to use Services 55, 56 and 98 for the week, and just £12 for children.

Service 59 now from Derriford Hospital

We’re also running Service 59, including Plympton, Sparkwell, Cornwood and Shaugh Prior – and have been able to extend the service to include Marjon and Derriford Hospital. You’ll be able to travel the whole route on a Zone 3 pass.

Full timetable details will be available in a pdf and on our website and app ready for Monday 15th August.

Oakleys Coaches have put out a message via Facebook:

Regrettably from the 15th August Oakleys Coaches will no longer be operating the 59, 55,56 or 98 bus services.

With the rise in fuel cost and the increased costs across the board we needed to try and increase our prices to operate the bus services.

All of the bus drivers needed a well deserved pay increase due to the cost of living crisis.

The only way to do this was to put the services up for re tendered.

Unfortunately we have been beaten on price by Plymouth CityBus.

I have to say. It has been a pleasure serving the local communities with our buses. We have put 100% effort in to trying to give a good reliable service.

We are all very sad to be losing these services.

Citybus web site–not all bad news

One nice new ‘toy’ on the web site is the full route tracking which comes in from the app.

Clock through to Live Departure Times and you get the map with all the bus stops

Screenshot (489)

from there you can zoom in and scroll around to select the stop you are interested in then click for departures

Screenshot (490)

As with the app you can see the services which are tracking with the live times in green. You can also click on Track Buses and see where all the buses are on the route

Screenshot (491)

You can then clock the bus to get a bit more detail including the fleet number and the livery

Screenshot (492)

This was all in the app but I prefer it on the desktop – it also means if I see something interesting on my route I can pop out and get a photo!

Although I have already mentioned some of the shortcomings of the route listing when searching for timetables with poor route descriptions and missing route sections being the main issues, there are a few good points here too.

Especially useful at the moment with all operators struggling to keep routes running as drivers get instructed to self isolate, the route listing does highlight any current service updates – and Citybus are really good at detailing when buses are missing from routes.

Screenshot (493)

Another nice feature is when you click on a route timetable

Web capture_30-7-2021_145334_www.plymouthbus.co.uk

You get the nice map at the top – which you can open in full screen – and see all the buses on the route and where they are. You can choose the direction although both are unhelpfully labelled To Derriford and also decide if you want to see the full timetable at all stops which might be helpful if your local stop isn't one of the major ones. You do have to click the update button to make the changes which might not be obvious to all but is pretty quick. You can select the date to see the timetables for other days of the week too. Although not perfect, and very few bus company web sites are, its a lot better than the previous incarnation in my view.  If they can just update the route descriptions its better than the old web site.

Cancelled Buses and Massive Buses causing Problems…

If you follow Plymouth Citybus on Twitter at the moment you will see a lot of services being unable to run due to “operational difficulties” – almost certainly down to staff shortages which is a problem facing a lot of companies at the moment, with transport particularly hard hit. They are actively recruiting for new drivers if anyone is interested… Although if you are a driver looking for work at the moment there are a lot of companies after your services!

Its not just Citybus of course as First Kernow have had to suspend operation on a few of its services:

We’re sorry to advise that due to the growing number of staff we have self-isolating, we are currently unable to operate our full timetables.

In order to provide certainty, we taken the decision to suspend our DayTripper and S1/2/3 routes on a temporary basis after Saturday 10th July.

We are hopeful that we will be able to restart these from 26 July 2021 and will update the situation prior to that date.

Please kindly keep an eye on our social media channels and website for current information and updates. Thank you all in advance for your patience and support during what is a challenging time for us all, it is appreciated and we hope to be back up and running again soon.

Meanwhile down in Cornwall one service which is still running is the Falmouth Coaster, although not everyone is so happy about it…

FALMOUTH's deputy mayor has made a complaint about the 'massive' open top tourist bus going through the town's pedestrianised zone.

Falmouth Packet

Cllr Coun Kirstie Edwards has complained both to the Department of Transport and to First Bus about the tourist bus that ploughs the town on an hourly basis.

The Falmouth Coaster open top bus tour, operated by First South West, follows a scenic route around Falmouth taking in the waterside, Pendennis Castle, Falmouth itself and the National Maritime Museum on route. The bus is hourly. Last month members of Falmouth Town council complained that the service was making a mockery of the pedestrianisation trial, and was 'literally' driving a bus through it. Cllr Edwards says she made the complaint as a resident about the massive bus constantly going through town.

"Many of us in council have attempted to find out why the huge double decker bus is allowed to go through town during pedestrian only times.

"It makes little sense that just because the small hopper bus is allowed to do it, the massive bus can also.

"In the last two days I’ve had endless people complaining about it, seen the dangers for myself as people, pushchairs and wheelchairs are crushed together as it passes, particularly near the grapes where the bollard is.

"It’s madness in non-Covid times, but in a busy packed Falmouth town centre, with Covid on the rise, it’s downright dangerous. I’ve also had reports of cameras and hanging baskets getting damaged from business.

"It is well outside my/ our remit to do much about it, but we can all moan at the people miles away that made this decision in the hope that it will be overturned."

She is urging other people who have been upset by it to complain themselves if they have been effected by it.

"I enjoy the circular open top with my kids and have done for years, but there is just no need to send it through town- the old route from the park and ride along the marina road into the Prince Of Wales pier and up Killigrew and around to the Dell area worked very well, with plenty of sights to see before it hit the sea front.

So if it’s bugging you as much as it’s bugging me, spend a few minutes having a jolly good moan at the people that think they know best about OUR town."

A spokesman for First South West said: “The Falmouth Coaster is registered through the statutory process in compliance with Cornwall Council’s traffic regulation orders and follows the same route taken through the town by Transport for Cornwall services.

"It’s already proved extremely popular with visitors and local residents alike and we are delighted to be able to bring an additional service to help the local economy recover from the effects of the pandemic.”

You can make contact to complain at:

https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/make-a-complaint/

You can also contact first bus at

https://www.firstbus.co.uk/cornwall/help-and-support

You would think after a difficult couple of years most business would welcome the open top service and the additional customers if would bring to the area. I would describe the buses in use as being massive either, and as the operator comments – it serves the same route as other TFC services in the town.

TB1

Plymouth Citybus are running a new shuttle service across the Tamar Bridge from the 1st August:

Like other key transport providers across the country we have been working hard during the coronavirus pandemic to continue to carry out essential engineering and maintenance work to ensure that our crossings remain in remains in a safe and serviceable condition.

We have been working closely with our contractors to ensure that Government guidance on safe working practices have been followed on all construction projects. This has included implementing social distancing measures and robust hand hygiene practices. We are also rigorously applying the Site Operating Procedures issued by the Construction Leadership Council.

Next phase of kerb replacement works

One of the key projects continuing during the past few months is the scheme to carry out essential engineering works to replace the bridge deck waterproofing system underneath the kerbs and to replace the bolts that fix the kerbs in place. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic our engineering team have had to amend the scheduled programme on a number of occasions to meet the latest Government guidance.

In May the kerb replacement works were moved to the north cantilever deck, rather than onto the main deck as previously planned. This ensured all users could continue to safely use the bridge while our team complied with the Government guidance in place at that time.

Work on the north cantilever is due to be completed on 1 August. After detailed consideration of the latest Government advice it has been decided to continue with the next phase of the project to ensure that this vital scheme is carried out as quickly as possible. This means moving the works onto the main deck.

As this will temporarily reduce the number of lanes on the main deck from three to two, we are introducing some significant new traffic management arrangements to keep the bridge operating as smoothly as possible at the same time as ensuring the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and engineering staff.

As well as re-opening the north cantilever, we need to use the south cantilever for westbound traffic which would previously have been using one of the lanes on the main deck. This means closing the south cantilever lane to pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters and re-instating the free shuttle bus service.

Having reviewed the operation of the shuttle bus during the previous closure of the south cantilever and analysed the feedback from service users, we have introduced a number of changes to make it easier and more efficient to use the service at the same time as ensuring it meets the latest Government guidance.

This means that, in addition to operating the free shuttle bus 24 hours a day, seven days a week as previously, we will be working with Plymouth Citybus to run a scheduled bus service.

The aim of the new service, which will provide two additional buses during the day and one bus during the evening and at weekends, is to enable pedestrians to cross the bridge and maintain social distancing, while also providing space inside the buses for class 1 and 2 mobility scooters and a small number of bikes.

The buses will run every 15 minutes between 06:00-19:00hrs during the day and every 30 minutes overnight. The service will also be supported by Plymouth Citybus’s Customer Experience Team who will be hand to answer any public enquiries and full timetables.

In line with current Government advice on travelling on public transport people using both the shuttle buses and the Plymouth Citybus service will be required to wear face coverings.

We would advise all pedestrians, cyclists and those using mobility scooters to use either the shuttle bus or the Plymouth Citybus service (which enables them to take their vehicles in the bus with them) to cross the bridge. This is particularly important for cyclists as it helps them to avoid the unnecessary hazard of cycling through the heavy traffic on the bridge during their morning and evening commutes.

We will be reviewing both services throughout the programme of works on the main deck and will make adjustments if necessary.

While we recognise that the closure of one of the lanes on the main deck will inevitably have an impact on local traffic, the current levels of traffic are still well below the normal levels for this time of year. This will help to minimise any delays.

Continuing with the project will also help provide employment for local workers and generate income for local suppliers, as well as avoiding any potential financial costs from delaying the contract.

Thank you for your patience and support while we carry out these essential engineering works. We will continue to closely monitor site progress, the wider coronavirus situation and the latest Government advice.

Despite the Twitter announcement it seems the full timetable is not yet available on the Citybus web site but I am sure it will be very shortly! I believe the intention is to use the Brighton Scania DDs on this service, but plans can and do change.

Something new and exciting coming soon

Just a quickie as I have run out of time to do a full post but thought this little snippet might be of interest to some of you…

Award-winning transport firm Plymouth Citybus has been named as lead sponsor of the forthcoming Devon Business Show – and will use the show to give a sneak preview of its £3.5million low-emission buses.

The company, named as Plymouth's large business of the year at the 2016 Herald Business Awards, has stepped in to back the huge event, which takes place at Plymouth Pavilions on Wednesday, June 14.

It will unveil its new vehicles before they hit the roads in late July.

Mark Collins, head of commercial and marketing at Plymouth Citybus, said: "We will be launching our new £3.5million investment at the show, giving visitors and exhibitors the chance to see our new high-tech premium, low-emission buses before they hit the roads in late July.

"We wanted to bring something new and exciting to the show and we think people will be impressed."

Top Five Plymouth Citybus Liveries

The first of an occasional series where I select my own top five and dare you to disagree with me! (surely not?)

This time we look at Plymouth Citybus liveries (standard liveries rather than any promotional schemes) so counting down to my number one Citybus livery …

Five

Never a real fan of the grey skirt. but a clean tidy livery

PCTPG TTT168X

Four

When freshly applied this was nice modern take on the traditional red and cream

Plymouth 120 (OCO 120S)

Three

When fully lined out this livery was superb.

TTT171X

Two

I know a lot of people dont like it but I love this new scheme. Clean and crisp and unique to Plymouth.

Plymouth Citybus 520 WG63HHY

One

Another livery which divided opinion at the time was this black and red scheme. The red skirt was a later addition to the original mainly black scheme and it worked a lot better for it. I actually liked it without the skirt too, but this was a nice bold update.

Plymouth 156 (ATK 156W) & 163 (TTT 163X)

So am I right or am I right?

Have I missed anything which should be listed here? (Maybe someone out there liked the maroon lake livery? I know its unlikely but you never know…)

Please let us all know what your favourites are - and more importantly why its your favourite!

Disappointed

STAGECOACH has said it is "extremely disappointed" with one of its drivers after a disabled woman was prevented from travelling on a bus because her pass was not valid for another few minutes.
Betty Willis attempted to catch Stagecoach South West's 155 service from Newport Road into the centre of Barnstaple on Thursday, November 26.
However, after the bus, which was due to arrive at 9.33am, reached the bus stop early, Mrs Willis was told her concession pass was not valid.
