The main operators have announced their Christmas services. No real surprises as it fits in with previous years operating patterns.

They just state that there are no services on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and News Years Day, and give times of last buses from Royal Parade on Christmas Eve

If you’re heading out shopping for gifts, or catching up with friends and family, don’t worry we’re still running buses over the holiday, just taking a break on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Between Monday 23^rd December and Saturday 4^th January special timetables will be in operation. Timetable booklets will soon be available to download for each route in our network, so you can check service levels for each day over the festive period.

Christmas and New Year's timetables..

Firstly, from all of us here at First Bus in Cornwall, we wish you all a pleasant and Merry Christmas and would like to thank you all for choosing to travel with us throughout the year.

During the holiday season, First Bus in Cornwall will be operating revised levels of service from: Monday 23 December 2024 until Thursday 2 January 2024.

Here are the planned levels of service:

Monday 23 December 2024

Operating on a Monday to Friday timetable, with adjustments for school holiday trips as appropriate.

Tuesday 24 December 2024
Christmas Eve

Monday to Friday timetable with school holiday adjustments. Services will run as normal until approximately 8:00 PM. For full details, please view the timetables here.

Christmas Day

No services will operate.

Thursday 26 December 2024
Boxing Day
No services will operate.

Friday 27 December 2024

A Saturday timetable will be in effect, except for Park & Ride for Truro, which will operate a Monday to Friday service.

Special Night Buses for Plymouth

Special late night buses will be running on two key party nights this Christmas to help Plymouth party-goers get home safely.
Plymouth’s Best Bar None scheme is funding the buses, which it hopes will be just the ticket for people out celebrating on 17 and 18 December – the Friday and Saturday before the Christmas weekend.
The night buses will run from Derry’s Cross at midnight, 2am and 4am. Buses will run each route three times on both nights.

• Route 1 is Devonport – St Budeaux – Ernesettle – Whitleigh – Southway – Crownhill – Peverell – Mutley
• Route 2 is St Judes – Alexandra Road – Lipson – Embankment – Woodford – Chaddlewood – Ridgeway – Merafield – Haye Road – Elburton – Plymstock – Cattedown
• Route 3 is Mutley – Lower Compton – Higher Compton – Deer Park – Lower Eggbuckland – Leigham – Estover – Derriford – Woolwell – Crownhill – Manadon – Ham – North Prospect

All routes are between 16 and 17 miles long so the timings should allow drivers to get their breaks in between runs.

Catherine Macdonald, Chair and Coordinator of Plymouth’s Best Bar None said: “We think these two nights are going to be the busiest of the festive period and so after talking to our partners – the Council, Devon and Cornwall Police and Pubwatch - have decided to trial night buses.

“We know people are worried about how they can get back home after a great night out and as an industry we wanted to do something about it!”

Councillor John Riley, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Community Safety, said: “This is great news. I’m sure a lot of people will be really pleased to hear about this – especially parents who worry about younger drinkers getting back home safely.

“We want people to go out and enjoy themselves in our clubs, pubs and bars in the run up to Christmas but we also know there are real concerns about how people can get back home – particularly late at night.”

Security staff will be on the buses just in case some of the ‘happier’ revellers get a little out of hand, A flat fare of £6 will be charged for all trips and people are being strongly encouraged to book here so that they know they have a seat and can be confident they can get home to bed. There are about 55 seats per bus so it is wise to book soon.

Best Bar None is an accreditation scheme supported by the Home Office and drinks industry that aims to improve standards in the evening and night time economy. Through a combination of responsible management and operation of licensed premises, ongoing improvements, and social responsibility, Best Bar None’s goal is to help provide a safer night out to all.

Community Safety

The tickets seem to be £6 each with some quite strict rules:

Tickets are non-transferable and must be used on the service which has been booked at that time and date.

Limited to a maximum of 53 seats.

No refunds available.

There are no toilet facilities on the bus.

There will be no food or drink allowed on the bus.

Security reserve the right to refuse access to anybody who is too intoxicated, or whose behaviour is not deemed acceptable.

Passengers will have to produce their ticket and ID to access the bus.

The bus will leave at the allotted time, passengers must have boarded the bus by this time.

Passengers accept that they will be recorded by body worn camera, recording both sound and images for all passengers and staff safety.

Passengers who's behaviour risks the safety of others or is considered anti-social may have their ID details and CCTV footage of any incidents on the bus passed to the police.

Passengers are responsible for their own safety once they leave the bus.

If you have a safety concern while on the bus please tell one of the security guards or the driver.

In order to leave the bus, passengers can ring to bell to be dropped off at the nearest safe position to stop.

The main question that appears unanswered in this is who is providing the three 53 seater coaches for these services? Can anyone out there confirm please? No service registrations have appeared yet – but they they are running behind anyway.

The Plymouth Citybus / Go Cornwall Santa Bus will be setting off soon!

December is around the corner which means one thing...the Go Cornwall Bus Santa Bus is coming!! Will it be as famous as the Coca-Cola truck? Perhaps not but we can dream...

This year, we will be touring West Cornwall from 1st - 10th December and East Cornwall from the 19th - 22nd December. We have tried to cover as many areas as possible so everyone has the chance to see our Santa bus.

This year we will be raising money for Children's Hospice South West, an extremely worthy cause that helps young people and their families across Devon and Cornwall. So please, if you can spare a few pennies to support CHSW, we would be very grateful.

So get your friends and family together and come out to see Santa on our spectacularly festive bus, grab some sweet treats and if you're lucky, you could be in with a chance of winning a £20 LOVE2SHOP voucher if you find the Golden Ticket!

Just a quick post to wish all readers and visitors to this little blog a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

I will have my usual Christmas break for the next week, returning with a two week Devon & Cornwall Transit post on Tuesday 2nd January (unless anything major happens in the mean time!)

Stagecoach Devon Christmas Services

We conclude our look at bus services over the festive period with a look at what Stagecoach are doing in the rest of Devon

The basic pattern is as follows:

• 17 - 23 December: Normal school holiday services
• 24 December: Sunday service. Last buses aprox 20:00
• 25 December: No service
• 26th December: Boxing Day service on selected routes

We'll be running local bus services right through the holiday season, only taking a break on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There'll be special timetables on our A, E, F1, F2, 5, 9 and 57 routes on Boxing Day

On Christmas Eve and New Years Eve our services will terminate early, around 8pm. This is so drivers are able to spend time with their families over the festive period. Times shown are for the last departures. if your service is not shown the full timetable will operate.

Week commencing 17-12-17

Late services on U1 as coded within our timetable operating mostly between Penryn university campus and Falmouth The Moor will not operate whilst the University is in recess. 

Service U3 will also not operate until the 8th of January 2018. 

Service 21 will operate the coded not college day trips for the duration of this week.

Please note services operating for Truro & Penwith college will only operate until the 20th

In line with the published term dates for community and voluntary-controlled schools all School day coded trips will end on the 20th and coded school holiday trips will operate on the 21st & 22nd.

Week commencing 24-12-17

• Sunday-  Normal operation of service.
• Christmas & Boxing day-  No service.
• 27/28/29th- Saturday service with the following adjustments for service 101 and Park & Ride for Truro. 101 & PR1A (Langarth Park - RCH Treliske) will operate the Monday to Friday timetable. Service 66 will operate on the Friday only.
• Saturday Normal operation of service.

Week commencing 31-12-17

• Sunday- Normal operation of service.
• New Year’s Day- No service, With the exception of service 101 which will operate a public holiday service providing links between St Austell train station & The Eden Project.
• The remainder of the week, in line with the published term dates for community and voluntary-controlled schools coded school holiday trips will operate on the 2nd & 3rd.  4th & 5th colleges and school coded trips will recommence.
• Saturday Normal operation of service.

You will have already noticed that there are a few question marks in the top table above. This is because Citybus have yet to give us any details of their Christmas services on their web site yet. I do know that they are not operating on Boxing Day (I personally don't have a problem with this as I think drivers should be able to have a decent holiday like most of the rest of us but I know some will be disappointed especially as Stagecoach will be running theirs)

When they do decide to reveal all I will of course mention it here.

I dont know what is going on with VOSA at the moment but the last N&P for the region was number 2569 dated 17th November 2016. It mentions that the next edition is due on the 24th November, a change from the previous two week frequency. Since then, nothing has been published at all. Target Travel have finally launched their new web site! There are still a few rough edges (links to the maps go to the timetables)  but it does on initial viewing seem pretty decent and a lot better than the old one. Bus services this Christmas

Plymouth Citybus have now released details of their Christmas services

Its interesting to see that they are keeping to the usual pattern and not joining the increasing numbers of operators who have started running on Boxing day, (or even Christmas day in some areas). Personally I am with Citybus with this one and think the drivers should be allowed the day off.

Meanwhile Stagecoach are operating some special services on Boxing day, but have not given any details just yet…

Nothing given by First Kernow yet.

Just to clarify details of buses due for Plymouth Citybus:
13 Enviro 200's with 7 in red swoop and the rest in Green Flash.
7 Enviro 400's  with 2 in Green Flash for the 5 5A as they are needed for school movements
the other 5 in red swoops * for the revamped 70/72/72 32 Torpoint services. These are due in January. 
* sound like they may carry some additional branding - "something a little different" but we will have to wait to see them!

Plymouth continues to get treated with new buses. The first of the new Alexander Dennis Enviro 200s have now arrived at Milehouse for Plymouth Citybus. The first few noted are in red livery and are expected to get full swoops before being placed into service.
