In The News

THE RIVIERA Line will feature in a new national website promoting the country's community rail lines and heritage railways to tourists both at home and abroad. The project has been awarded a £75,000 Government grant and will draw upon the digital marketing expertise of the based Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership, who have won a number of national awards for their online campaigns. The new website will be launched in 2017 and will be accompanied by a national and international marketing campaign. It will be translated into key European languages, and will be user-friendly on PCs, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

DRONES are being used by Network Rail to help them protect the Dawlish rail line. Following the extreme weather at the beginning of 2014 which caused part of the railway line at Dawlish to collapse into the sea, Network Rail began working with residents on a study looking into the impact of coastal flooding, erosion and cliff instability on the route and the options available to limit the effects of these in the future.

A PETITION has been launched to reinstate a bus route between Torbay and Dawlish Warren that has been axed by Stagecoach.

Currently passengers on the buses can leave Torquay as late as 10.30pm, seven days a week, to return to Shaldon, Teignmouth, Dawlish, and Dawlish Warren, while from Dawlish Warren, buses run up until 11.35pm back to Torquay. However, from May 29, the Hop11 bus will be withdrawn and replaced by an extended route 22 (rebranded Hop22), meaning the last bus from Torquay to Dawlish Warren will now be at 7pm from Dawlish Warren to Torquay, at 8.10pm.

The long awaited ‘new’ Derriford Hospital Park & Ride bus is expected to enter service today - 25th May.

A much more suitable bus for the busy service than the MAN MCV they use at the moment. It certainly looks the part. The last few days the PR3 has been operated by one of the new ex Citybus double deckers also in the new colours.

Steaming through the westcountry

Every year the Railway Touring Company operate a railtour around the UK commencing in London, travelling to Cornwall in the far West and to the North of Scotland, before returning to London.  The Great Britain IX tour in 2016 journeyed for 9 days being primarily steam-hauled throughout which is quite an achievement on the modern rail network.  The Westcountry legs of the journey from London Victoria to Plymouth on Tue 26 Apr and from Penzance to Bristol on Wed 27 Apr were hauled by LMS Royal Scot Class 6100 'Royal Scot’ - albeit with a diesel on the rear due to the failure of the second steam locomotive originally planned.  In fact the scheduled locomotives changed several times in the months leading up to the tour.

The first picture shows the westbound train near South Brent and the second picture the eastbound train making a spirited ascent of the 1 in 42 Hemerdon bank near Plympton, Plymouth.

Junction Jaunt

Sadly I was unable to make the Junction Jaunt so missed out on what looks like a fun event. Thanks to Peter for the report and the photos:

I thought that you might like to know how today's Junction Jaunt went. We managed to get 108 people to walk down from Liskeard station to Coombe Junction Halt to catch the train this morning. Bearing in mind that last year's Annual total was 26 passengers, we achieved something like a 315% increase in patronage in this one day alone. Although I had forewarned the train crew, when the Class 153 drew into Coombe, the guard's jaw dropped at the crowd that was waiting to join the train. There was already a respectable load on board from Looe and the expression on the passengers' faces of this 'London rush hour' crowd trying to board at the sleepy Cornish halt was a real joy. A few pictures that hopefully convey the fun of the occasion.

• The 66 will become part of the 13 which is being renumbered 13/13B/13D. The route will be extended from Totnes to Brixham and all buses serving Brixham will also go to Newton Abbot, creating a new link between both locations. 
• The current 13 service between Brixham and South Devon College will reduce in frequency to every 2 hours. A new two hourly 13B service will run direct from Brixham to Totnes. 
• South Hams District Council Offices will be served at the start and end of the day only. In the morning, the bus leaves Newton Abbot at 0726, arriving at Follaton House at 0836. In the afternoon, the bus leaves at 1616, arriving at Torbay Hospital at 1703. Here, anyone travelling onto Newton Abbot can transfer onto our Hop12 service which runs up to every 10 minutes.

RESIDENTS from Brushford and Dulverton took advantage of another special trip on the new Exmoor Community Bus. The trip to Bideford on Wednesday, May 11, was hailed a great success and enjoyed by members of the newly formed Exmoor Community Bus Club. The Exmoor Community Bus Association is run by volunteers and they would be pleased to welcome any new volunteers who are able to help with the production of regular newsletters or with being a trip companion to assist the more frail passengers enjoy their journey, by walking around with them having a coffee and chat.

Stagecoach South West will be running a further surgery event in North Devon to garner feedback on its bus network. It follows similar events in East-the-Water, Bideford and Appledore, which were organised after residents complained and put together petitions following changes to bus routes announced earlier this year. The surgery will take place at Barnstaple Guildhall on Tuesday, May 17 and will run from 10am to 2pm.
