Derriford Developments

Plymouth City Council has approved funding contributions towards two major transport improvement schemes for the north of the city.

The Derriford Transport Scheme and Derriford Hospital Interchange were recently awarded a total of £11.56 million from the Heart-of-the-South-West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW LEP) – the body responsible for allocating funding for large-scale transport schemes across Plymouth, Devon, Torbay and Somerset.

This includes a £10.16 million contribution towards the £12.72 million Derriford Transport Scheme, which will see a major upgrade to Derriford Roundabout and provide additional traffic lanes, new bus lanes and improved traffic signals, as well as improvements to the William Prance Road junction.

The remaining £2.56 million will be covered by contributions from planned development sites in the area, but the Council has agreed to fund this from its capital budget in advance of receiving the contributions.

The Council has also approved a £840,000 funding contribution towards the new Derriford Hospital Interchange, which was awarded £1.4 million from the HotSW LEP. Delivered in partnership with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, this scheme will help to reduce congestion and make bus journeys to and from the hospital quicker and more reliable.

Both schemes are part of a ‘master plan’ of highway improvements that will help to unlock development and deliver the 9,000 new jobs and 3,000 new homes that are proposed for the north of the city. This also includes the proposed Forder Valley Link Road, which was recently earmarked to receive £22.5 million from the Growth Fund and the new Marjon Link Road, currently under construction.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The A386 is the main route between the city centre and the north of the city, including Derriford Hospital, the University of St Mark and St John and the Plymouth Science Park. It is often congested at peak times and proposed developments in the area will put even more pressure on this part of our transport network. These schemes will help to keep traffic moving as our city grows, improve bus journey times and reliability and provide better walking and cycling facilities along this key route.”

Cycle Routes

Plymouth City Council has been awarded £2.46 million from the Department for Transport to improve walking and cycling routes to and from the Derriford area.

The project will see a total investment of £3.51 million over the next five years and deliver more than four kilometres of the city’s Strategic Cycle Network.

Improved on- and off-road cycling routes will be provided along a number of roads, including Plymbridge Road, Southway Drive and Tavistock Road and will benefit people with mobility problems as well as pedestrians and cyclists.

The programme, which will also see enhancements to walking and cycling facilities in Honicknowle, is part of a ‘master plan’ of highway improvements that will help unlock development and deliver more than 9,000 new jobs and 3,000 new homes in the north of the city.

It will link in with other transport improvements being made in the area, including the Marjon Link Road and the Derriford Transport Scheme. Full consultation on each element of the walking and cycling programme will be completed before works start on the ground.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We are committed to promoting active travel and the health, economic, environmental and quality of life benefits that come with it. Cycling in Plymouth has gone up by over 40 per cent in the last four years and doubled along the routes where we have targeted investment. This programme will improve walking and cycling routes to and from the Derriford area and deliver another section of our citywide network.”

Councillor Philippa Davey, Plymouth’s Cycling Commissioner, added: “In 2007, 67.4 per cent of cyclists who took part in a consultation exercise said they found it difficult to cycle on our Northern Corridor. Some of the issues they raised were a lack of continuous cycle paths and lanes, concerns about safety and the high volume of traffic. These improvements look to address these concerns and provide better facilities for both experienced and inexperienced cyclists.”

After much discussion with the local authorities I can advise that, provided vehicle owners commit to attending following the cancellation of the Hoe show in the rally diary, a location has been identified and provisional approval granted for a Bus and Classic Vehicle Rally & Running Day to take place in Plymouth.
Much work is now taking place to ensure this 'New' enthusiast event is of a standard both the Enthusiasts and Public alike expect and to this end we are in consultation with a number of sponsors to ensure its success.
Social Media and assoc websites are now being targeted to raise awareness. My committee will keep you informed as to developments.

From 30th March the B will no longer serve Starcross, Dawlish Warren or Dawlish and will revert to finishing at Exminster. This is following the end of 12 months of funding by Devon County Council to cover the extension to Dawlish which, unfortunately, did not generate enough additional passengers to make it sustainable once the funding period ended. At the same time, we also took the opportunity to look at the B extension from Dawlish Warren into Exeter, which had been introduced following the withdrawal of the Hop2.
The review showed that the service is little used: the train station is located a few yards away from the main bus stop and the more frequent bus connections between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish attract the majority of use. Therefore the decision was taken to also withdraw this service.
However a new 2B service is being introduced which will maintain popular peak hour connections between Dawlish and Matford. There will be two early and two afternoon journeys Monday to Friday and one early morning and two afternoon journeys on Saturdays. The new, combined Hop2/2B timetable provides a bus up to every 15 minutes in the peak hour, an improvement on the current every 20 minutes frequency.
The once a day 2A journey from Dawlish Warren is also being withdrawn. Customers from Dawlish Warren can continue to use the Hop11, which runs up to every half hour 7 days a week, to travel from Dawlish Warren to connect onto the Hop2 (and 2B) at Dawlish.

Following Torbay Council and Devon County Council cuts to bus service funding we are making changes to our 17, 18 and Hop11 bus services.
The changes to the 18 Brixham – Kingswear service affect both early morning and evening journeys. In the mornings, the 0715 from Brixham and 0733 from Kingswear will no longer run. However, Stagecoach will retain the 0655 Brixham and 0713 Kingswear departures without funding to provide an early morning alternative. In the evenings the last 17 from Brixham will leave at 1830 and the last 18 from Brixham will leave at 1935 (2000 from Kingswear). The 1935 is a new journey that is being added by Stagecoach to replace withdrawn journeys at 1905 and 2005 (which were 1922 and 2022 from Kingswear).On the Hop11 the 0630 from Torquay / 0740 from Dawlish Warren is being withdrawn, with the 0815 from Dawlish Warren retimed to 0810 to help fill the gap. There are also earlier journeys on this route which remain unchanged, meaning that the impact on passengers will be minimal.

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to ‘Save the 18!’ bus service after Stagecoach announced it was withdrawing its evening services between Brixham and Kingswear
Elliot Massey, a student who grew up in Brixham and returns regularly, has started a petition on Change.org to reinstate the evening service which is ‘well used by residents and tourists alike’. It currently has around 250 signatures and can be found here.

Exeter's Green Party members have blasted 'devastating' cuts to local bus services, and are preparing for a day of action this week.
Alongside a launched online petition to keep bus services that are heading towards the chopping block, Exeter Green Party will be chatting to passengers on Exeter High Street and encouraging them to let Devon County Councillors know how the cuts will affect their daily lives.

ILFRACOMBE will be treated to a new and expanded train service from next month when its Dotto Train returns to the town.
It comes after operators Filers Travel said they had been surprised by the overall popularity of the train in its debut year, with more than 7,000 people using the service in 2014.

I am sure the next time we see 220 she will look a lot better than this. She already has new panels fitted and is currently in the paintshop I believe so should appear in full swoops very shortly.

Following the cessation of trading of Western Greyhound we will be running a new service between Liskeard and Padstow. From Monday 16th March a new route, service 75 (previously Western Greyhound route 555) will operate hourly between Liskeard and Padstow via Bodmin and Wadebridge. We will be accepting all existing Western Greyhound passes until the end of March. We are working on getting fares for this route on our ticket machines for Monday morning. Pease note all routes that were taken over to form Go Cornwall Bus on the just 3 months ago remain unchanged, but will now see the addition of service 75.
We have been working hard to see what help we can offer following the news on Friday 13th March that the route will no longer run following the cessation of Western Greyhound services, so would like to thank all staff involved to make sure services are still able to run.
