A bit of blue

A new low-emission #Enviro200 upgrades Taw and Torridge Coaches' service 31 on the North Devon coast, which the independent operator provides in partnership with Devon County Council. Starting at Ilfracombe’s picturesque harbour, the route moves inland to Mullacott Cross before descending steeply from Mortehoe to reach Woolacombe and its beach, often ranked as one of the best in Britain.

Liveried externally in Taw and Torridge’s distinctive sky blue and silver, the Enviro200’s bespoke interior offers 40 seats. Apart from five tip-up seats in the wheelchair and separate buggy bay, they are comfortable high-back Alexander Dennis SmartSeats trimmed in two-tone e-leather and double-padded where possible. Bright wood-effect flooring contrasts with the seats for an attractive overall experience.

Taw & Torridge Managing Director Mark Hunt said: “We’re delighted to upgrade our customers’ journeys this year with this brand new Enviro200 single decker that Alexander Dennis has built to our specification. This allows us to reallocate the similar bus we bought in 2021 from core journeys on our popular service 31 to supporting duties. The Enviro200 is a great fit for our service routes, delivering efficiency and substantial passenger capacity in a vehicle that navigates North Devon’s narrow and steep lanes with ease.”

Our Regional Sales Manager Mark Taylor added: “We’re proud to support Taw and Torridge Coaches in enhancing vital rural connectivity with this bespoke Enviro200. Designed to meet the unique demands of North Devon’s scenic but challenging terrain, this vehicle combines comfort, efficiency and accessibility. It’s a great example of how our buses deliver real benefits for operators, passengers and the environment alike.”

Falcon hangs on while Megabus cuts back

Coach provider Megabus has announced a planned network reduction. The low-cost coach operator is to scale back its operations in England and Wales, from 4 December, due to low passenger demand.

When the changes take effect, Megabus will continue to operate the below services:

-     all services within Scotland (under the Scottish Citylink and Megabus brands)

-     all cross-border services between Scotland and England and Wales

-     all Falcon services in the Southwest of England

All other Megabus services within England and Wales will cease to operate from 4 December.

However, the company’s cross-border services will continue to provide a number of connections in England and Wales, including links between Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield and London; Manchester, Birmingham and London; and Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff.

All customers affected by the service changes will be contacted in the near future, and arrangements are being put in place to ensure customers who have already booked tickets can find alternative transport or will be provided with a refund.

Megabus Managing Director Simone Walsh said: “This has been an extremely difficult decision. However, unfortunately it is not sustainable for us to continue operating our current network as the customer demand is simply too low. So, we are making these changes to ensure that we have a more efficient network going forward.”

“Megabus will continue to operate its long-standing cross-border services, which also provide connections within England and Wales. And our Falcon services between Plymouth and Bristol are continuing to run as normal, as well as all our services across Scotland.”

“We want to thank the many passengers who travel with us every day and will ensure that we continue to operate an affordable and high-quality service on the parts of the network that are unaffected by these changes. And we will work hard to ensure that customers who have booked services that are being discontinued are looked after and offered an alternative option” added Walsh.

Tickets for Megabus and Falcon services can be booked on megabus.com and booking is available until 5 January, with all services during the festive period now available to book.

Stagecoach National Express Merger is ON

Bus and coach group National Express has agreed an all-share takeover of rival Stagecoach in a deal that will bring together two of the UK’s biggest transport firms.

The deal, which comes after talks between the pair were first revealed in September, will create a combined firm worth around £1.9 billion with a fleet of about 40,000 vehicles and a workforce of around 70,000 people.

Under the terms of the tie-up, National Express shareholders would own around 75% of the combined group and Stagecoach shareholders around 25%.

The deal, which will be voted on by shareholders, values Stagecoach at around £437 million.

The firms revealed that around 50 roles are expected to be cut under plans to slash annual costs by at least £45 million following the merger.

This is an exciting opportunity to bring together two of the UK's iconic transport brands to create a strong, diverse business

The jobs are set to go across the head offices, IT and corporate departments of the two firms, as well as some overlapping senior management positions.

But they stressed there would be no front-line job losses, such as among drivers, or depot closures due to the deal.

In a bid to ease any potential regulatory competition concerns, Stagecoach also announced deals to offload the marketing, retail and customer service operations of Megabus UK and the Falcon South-West coach service, as well as its 35% stake in the Scottish Citylink Coaches joint venture.

Stagecoach chairman Ray O’Toole will become the chairman of the merged group, while National Express chief executive Ignacio Garat will keep the same role at the merged firm.

The merger comes as both firms have been hit hard by the pandemic, with passenger numbers slumping due to lockdowns, remote working and a switch away from public transport.

Government support to help transport firms through the crisis is also due to end soon.

It follows a previous attempt at a merger in 2009, when National Express rejected a £1.7 billion merger deal mooted by Stagecoach.

The former attempt at a merger between the two would have seen Stagecoach own the majority of the combined group, with National Express left with up to 40%.

Mr Garat said: “The proposed combination of National Express and Stagecoach, and the unique strengths of both companies and their teams, will create a leading multi-modal passenger transport business in the UK.”

Martin Griffiths, chief executive of Stagecoach, added: “This is an exciting opportunity to bring together two of the UK’s iconic transport brands to create a strong, diverse business that is well-placed to grow the market for greener and smarter public transport for the benefit of all stakeholders.”

National Express has bus and coach networks across the UK and Spain, while it also runs school bus services in America and a rail franchise in Germany.

But Stagecoach is UK focused and is Britain’s biggest bus and coach operator.

National Express said the deal will allow it to use Stagecoach’s depot network to run and maintain its coach operations while also allowing it to expand its new growth initiatives – such as private coach hire, corporate shuttle and accessible transport – across Stagecoach’s UK operations

as mentioned above Stagecoach have announced the sale of Megabus AND the South West Falcon operation to Comfort Delgro Group (CDG)

“Stagecoach developed the Megabus brand in 2003, as we saw real potential in the long-distance inter-city coach market in the UK. In 2005,our belief in this market saw us create a joint venture with CDG to run the Scottish Citylink business and we further expanded our inter-citycoach business with the development of our bespoke Falcon service in the South West of England serving Bristol Airport. Through this transaction, Stagecoach ensures that those business will continue to thrive under the ownership of the world renowned CDG brand".

New Coaches

There has been some confusion with a batch of new Volvo B11RT / Plaxton Elite Interdeck coaches for Megabus. It has been well known that Plymouth was to become a major base for Megabus work and a few of these new coaches were recently placed into service with Stagecoach Devon legal lettering.

Since then the batch has continued up to 54276. The whole batch now seem to run under Midland Red South control. It is believed that some of these may come back under Devon control eventually but there have been conflicting reports! These coaches are now regular visitors to Plymouth on Megabus work and do look very smart even if the Megabus livery is a bit cartoony for some! Stagecoach 54276 YY65VXT

Going Gold

It seems fitting that Plymouth should be one of the first places to gain a new Megabus Gold service using the brand new Van Hool double deck coaches. We were among the pioneers of luxury double deck coach travel in the 1980's with Trathens running exotic Skyliners against the mighty National Express. They turned heads back then, and I am sure many people will notice these impressive beasts rolling in and out of Plymouth:

The full network for Megabus Gold:
megabusGold.com Overnight sleeper services with a deluxe daytime travel network

There is only the one departure on the Gold service laving Plymouth at 16:35 and arriving in London at 21:45 The return from London leaves at 11:00 and arrives Plymouth at 16:10. Standard price seems to be £16 each way.

The 16:35 departure from Plymouth actually arrives in London before the standard Megabus departure at 16:00 as it does not stop anywhere else. It looks like I am going to have to plan a London trip soon!

Megabus

"Stagecoach do mention Plymouth as one of the places its likely to appear from time to time so you never know, we might just see these impressive machines sitting at the bottom of Royal Parade."
Well that was from my blog post back in November 2012 when I looked at the new Plaxton Elite i for Megabus.

Well its been a bit of a wait but here we see Stagecoach 54207 taking two coach spaces at Bretonside, captured on camera by Richard Smith a few days ago.

By coincidence Megabus are in the local news with this story on This is Plymouth yesterday:

A BUS company has launched an investigation after Plymouth-bound passengers were left standing in the snow in the early hours of the morning. Travellers making their way to the city from London are livid after they say they were ordered off the coach and left in the "bitter cold" for 45 minutes.Operator Megabus is now offering all those on board the 11.45pm service from London Victoria a full refund. "We were chucked off the bus at Bristol at 3am, for what seemed like no reason, and made to wait in the snow and bitter cold for 45 minutes." A Megabus spokesman said the company was "very concerned" about the complaint. "Upon arrival at Bristol for a passenger drop-off the driver noticed some damage to the vehicle," he said. "As a result, passengers were taken to a third party operator where they were transferred on to a different coach. "The second coach stopped for a scheduled driver changeover at Bridgewater. "Passengers should have been kept informed of developments throughout the journey and we are investigating why this does not appear to have happened. We would like to apologise for the disruption.

Full story This is Plymouth

This is the kind of ‘non story’ that the local media love so much. Clearly something went wrong. A complaint was made and the company apologised and offered full refunds. Simples.

Mega Giveaway

Megabus Man

The mega giveaway is back, with a massive 10,000 FREE SEATS* to giveaway on English and Welsh Megabus routes!

The seats are available to purchase immediately, for travel taking place within the period 9th January – 26th February 2012. (No free seats will be available when booking less than 7 days before travel) For full terms and conditions of the sale please refer to www.megabus.com/wintersale-terms

megabus.com fares start from as little as £1 plus 50p booking fee, the network covers over 50 great UK destinations and over the winter period we are giving you the opportunity to travel for FREE*

*50p booking fee still applies.

It certainly seems like a good idea but 10000 seats isn't really a lot so there cant be that many available from Plymouth so good luck in finding any. I must admit I have not kept that up-to-date withy Megabus. This is is part due to the awful web site!

Its a real shame that they do not publish full proper timetables for their routes rather than just expecting you to search for specific journeys. If you know where and when they go its a lot easier to plan and book. Thats my opinon anyway. That said one day I will have a go and do a Megabus run somewhere

Megabus

©Iwouldstay FLickr blog this)

Stagecoach have announced a few changes to its Megabus network. Although there dont appear to be any changes to the Plymouth service there is one big change which is of interest.

megabus.com, the UK 's leading budget inter-city coach service, in agreement with Transport for London, is to move its main hub in the capital to Victoria Coach Station.
The move comes as megabus.com announces a further expansion of its UK network, with new locations and journey options for passengers in Scotland, the Midlands and the South Coast.
The first megabus.com services will start running out of Victoria Coach Station from 1 October 2007, moving from the existing location at Greenline Terminal in Bulleid Way.

The move to Victoria makes a lot of sense and is good to see Transport for London working with Stagecoach to get this sorted. I dont suppose National Express are to thrilled though!

Its also a good idea that tickets are available to purchase at the coach station almost right up to the departure time. Perhaps in time similar arrangements could be made at other locations.

It is also good to see some more services that serve other routes and not just into london. It would be good to see something along the lines to Plymouth - Bristol - Birmingham - etc.

Megabus

Its been confirmed tonight that the first of the new 15M Volvo coaches for Stagecoach Megabus has appeared on the Plymouth - London run. The departure from London today will stop are Exeter to allow them to test the facilities there - to make sure the long coaches can fit!
It will then come down to Plymouth tomorrow morning for the Plymouth - London trip.
Not sure which one it might be - but there is a good chance it is CN07BAU which can be seen on Ben Morrolls Fotopic pages

Megabus gets even more Mega

Megabus operator Stagecoach extended its fleet today by taking delivery of Britain's longest coach - the first of a 45-vehicle investment - which will be used on routes between Plymouth and London.
The 15-metre (50ft) vehicle, which is three metres longer than a traditional coach, has been produced by Volvo and Plaxton as part of an £11 million order.

We really are doing quite well down here at the moment!

Incoming

Just a quickie tonight but a 'new' arrival in Exeter is of some interest. The bus in question is Stagecoach 13601 BIW4977 a Leyland Olympian 'Megabus' which was previously a Hong Kong bus.
Its of interest because these buses are due to operate on the X38 Plymouth - Exeter service. Not sure when, as I expected they will be refurbished and repainted first but they will make the X38 a lot more visible again.
There are a couple of great photos on Chris Martin's Megabus Fotopic page.
Here, Here and here.
Just as I am typing this a message comes through from the driver who brought them down to Exeter
"what a delight to drive down the M4 and M5 - one hell of a beast"
I for one cant wait!

X38 going Mega

Surprise news from Stagecoach Devon is that three ex Megabus Olympians are due shortly for use on the X38 Plymouth to Exeter service!

The buses expected shortly comprise of
13621 H724KDY Photo
13622 H725KDY Photo
13623 H494LNA Photo

If these buses do turn up and are used on the X38 it would certainly raise the profile of the service as I would expect them to be suitable liveried and well presented as the rest of the SCD fleet. It will certainly be interesting riding on them through Ashburton!
