Easing into Plymouth

E400s from London

The large batch of Enviro 400s from London have started to arrive at Milehouse. E18 16 22 21 31 30 are seen above round the back of the depot.

E19 - this bus was featured here a few days ago when the news of their impending arrival broke

E400s from London

E24.

The first of them is already in the bodyshop being worked on so it probably wont be long before we start seeing them out on the road. Its looking likely that some at least will enter service as dual door buses. Whether we will then see some getting the full single door conversion later on remains to be seen.

Thanks to Jason for the photos!

  1. From my time working in the London area, I recall that the wheelchair ramp was in the centre doorway, so perhaps the conversion to single-door is not as straightforward as it might seem. And by the way, do London buses still not use electronic destination displays? Why not?

    1. Transport for London has continued to specify printed blinds up until now, as it is felt they look better and are more legible than the orange electronic displays which were on offer until recently.

That may be changing now, as five Stagecoach London buses are now running around with a new generation of electronic display, that is able to replicate the font of the traditional printed blinds but has all the advantages of electronic (easy to change/reprogramme, virtually no mechanical parts, no risk of tearing etc). At this stage the displays are experimental and printed blinds continue to be specified*

      * with one exception. A small batch of slimline Optare Solo SRs recently entered service with Metroline on three routes in Hampstead Garden Suburb that require small, narrow buses. These were bought off-the-peg and have standard electronic displays (white LED) as Optare no longer fits apertures for mechanical blinds to its Solo products. Someone at Metroline has done well to reproduce what is a fairly good TfL-style font within the constraints of first-generation LED displays!

  2. Hopefully one of them replaces that ugly big bulky open top bus on the 25. Looks dreadful, chuck it in the bloody bin.

  5. What's wrong with open top bus on the 25? Gained lots of extra passengers, and not just tourists, who mainly go upstairs leaving downstairs for the regulars.
