Citybus Fares Increasing

News release from Plymouth Citybus

On the 4th December 2016 you will see a change to the tickets we offer and most of our ticket prices will increase.

Singles tickets will generally see an increase of between 5p and 15p, with return tickets increasing by between 5p and 35p.

Dayrider tickets Zone 1 & 2 will increase to £4.00 for adults and £3.00 for children (18 and under).

Weekly tickets will see an increase of £1 for adults and 50p for children. We have frozen all zone 2, zone 4 and annual product at current prices.

Due to the popularity of the ‘Add a Kid for a Quid’ introduced in the summer, we will continue to offer this ticket for 5 to 16 year olds. We will also introduce a new ‘Nightrider’ ticket, offering unlimited zone 1 and 2 travel after 6.30pm for just £2.00.

Those in full time education, training and apprenticeships; will still be given a 15% discount against adult fare through our ‘Get On’ products.

A downloadable price guide is available below, showing all new season ticket prices. Printed price guides will be available from our Travel Centre from 21st November 2015.

We have done our very best to absorb the increases we have incurred to our costs, through investment and growth; we have introduced new products designed to offer excellent value for money and frozen prices wherever possible.

I am sorry that this fare review is necessary and thank you for your support and custom.

Noticeably missing from the highlights are the monthly ticket prices - but these do appear in the full ticket guide

All of a sudden the Skipper Ticket is looking a lot better value, although I would not be surprised to see this ticket increase in price shortly. As one of many people who will be loosing the excellent Green Travel Pass at the end of December this has just made the choice a little bit harder. I need to to do some sums to work out my options…

  1. all to line the pockets of the fat cats in head office & also as was warned because PCB have the monopoly on services in Plymouth, it won't be long before SC instigate a major bus war against them with cheaper fares

  2. been saying that since SC took over - lets face it, SC have shown no interest whatsoever in entering any form of bus war with Citybus. I cant se it happening anytime soon

  3. Citybus really are taking the mick out of their customers now and I am being polite here. The minute they pushed First out of the way they have started slamming fares up. How about improve their services first before asking for yet more money for their dire service!

  5. Stage coach never start a bus war may be target travel should start

  6. And the last rise was January 2016 so two increases within 12 months? Monopolistic or tough trading - I suggest the latter. PCB doesn't seem to be the roaring success other GA subsidiaries are?

    1. Personally I think it is a mixture of both, Anon 19:55. I believe you are dead right that PCB are not anywhere near the success of other subsideries or indeed anywhere near what Go ahead had predicted/wanted from PCB. They got theirselves into a needless bus war with First expecting First to just give up and leave them with a monopoly in 2013. In reality First gave more than a good account of themselves leaving PCB with loss making routes in Tavistock and Torpoint and stealing customers off them in Honicknowle, Efford etc, and also forcing PCB into fare cuts. I think First knew they were going from Plymouth eventually and hung around to simply do damage to PCB before they went. My prediction is that GO Ahead will not own PCB or operate in the city within 5 years they will give up and sell up along with other loss making subs. They remind me of First a few years ago..making same mistakes, high fares and constant service changes/cuts. Who knows First could end up buying PCB off them in the future.

  7. This maybe me, but I don't understand the need for the two leaflets? The fact the design is markedly different between the two and isn't helpful but confusing.

    1. I think the other black leaflet is aimed at students and fits the image they have with previous leaflets and promotional materials

  8. Do they realise that the 4 week tickets (28 days) and the month tickets (31 days) are exactly the same price?

    1. I think this is meant to be a sweetener to get you to pay monthly by DD !

  9. not that im being mean to pcb but in the paper it said that they put the fares up to improve services and there last timetable change annoyed many people which i find funny how they say that they will improve it and really partly change the bus times back to what they was but making you pay more, so almost like they said:
we will make the service rubbish, put the fares up and put it back to normal with two new flash buses and new gas buses to replace the old darts!

    1. Pretty much Sums them up!! Not a dig at them as I feel they have improved in areas, but I would have thought the idea of running a service would be for what the fare paying customer wants(especially when they have to pay a fortune just for day ticket!) and not what the company want, ok something's may not be able to happen for good reason but, the fact the buses are always late shows flaws in the timetable, maybe additional time should be added to cater for delays, some of the timetables are shocking too, some services have plenty of buses others don't, putting the prices up will just antagonise people more!

    2. I am not sure how you can sort out the timetables as the biggest reason for buses being late is the traffic. I catch the 50 home from Derriford, often trying to get the 17:10 bus. Quite a few evenings recently traffic has been horrendous and everything is running late. The latest my 17:10 bus has turned up was 17:45 which then takes ages to get back out of Derriford. Other days at the same time there is no traffic and the bus has to sit and wait at several points along the way to avoid running early! It is totally random, I cant see how you can plan for that. Chatting to one driver recently it took him over an hour to get from Asda to Derriford and back to Asda again - it should be about 20 mins!

    3. yea mainly it is the traffic making them late though most people dont like the fares going up but pcb have got alot more newer buses that is going to cost alot to run really as they bus stops used to have a poster showing a pie chart showing how much of your bus fare goes where e.g. drivers/staff.
though on Tuesday i waited for a 42a from southway to go to derriford and two 41s came in with one driver telling me the latest you will have to wait for a 42a would be 11ish, it was the 10am one i was waiting for so sadly where i live you cant get anywhere with traiffc witch is why there are shuttles around now to help you get where you need to go

  10. Yep that seems a fairly accurate assessment of PCB to me. Fleecing Plymouth residents with extortionate fares whilst providing what has got to be one of the worst bus services in the country. Totally shambolic service. They or at least we need some good competition in the city. The routes Stagecoach run are far better, with much lower fares to boot.
