So quite a flurry of activity from First over the last month. On top of this there have been a few new services in Cornwall where First are very much 'on the up' compared with a few years ago. Also of note are the two new registrations from Target Travel who appear to be taking over from Oakleys. Is this the end of their brief foray into tendered services? We will be having a closer look at some of the Plymouth changes in more detail over the next few weeks. First 42438 P438ORL
Only a few years ago many people expected First to give up on the 76 as Western Greyhound seemed poised to win the battle. How times change...

  • This is the Westcountry: Buses of Somerset win Taunton park and ride contract A NEW contract to provide Taunton’s popular park and ride service has been awarded to The Buses of Somerset, the Taunton-based operation of First Bus. The fleet of buses and drivers will be familiar to passengers as the company has been operating the service on a temporary contract since April this year

  • LANCASTER OMNIBUS: New Bus Journey Planner For Manchester Called Manchester Buses, it's produced by Manchester-based IOL Logistics, who describe it as a "labour of love" which they felt compelled to provide as there was "no decent and modern journey planner available". The Man on the Lancaster Omnibus was initially surprised at what appeared to be a slur on the good folk of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) but a check on that organisation's website soon showed that their journey planning service consists solely of a link to Traveline North West. Despite this, Manchester Buses apparently uses TfGM's timetable database.

  1. 80 80B - these were the last open registration against that licence. The 32 is the only registration on a new licence held solely by Daniel Tweedie from August 14. Yes tiding up, but also reflects a change of ownership / responsibility (?) at A Line.

First are in general succeeding as shown by the enthusiasm, innovation, expansion and inward investment. Growing a company is good fun and you get to take risks. Western Greyhound is showing just how hard it is to contract, particularly for a private company. Unless you act fast and admit the truth quickly (very hard to do), you soon have no money for redundancies, marketing initiatives or anything. The fires were costly and take the eye off the financial ball whilst looking at how to cope today. Cutting corners is often not enough. The fact that their major income source, Cornwall Council, was also cutting back, is just bad luck.

We have a Truronian liveried Mercades midi coach 56000? TRU 4? running the 10 from Wiveliscombe to Wellington an odd sight. It is a route ex Quantock Heritage and is not commercial, but running it on an emergency basis keeps anyone else out of the area. Buses of Somerset are also investing in new style stop flags; seen around Bridgwater.

  2. Western Greyhound has finally published its overdue accounts. The auditors statements are worth reading as well as the accounts. The fire clearly isn't the basis for all WGs ills.
