Thoughts?

Two things that stand out for me – there are a good few service enhancements here, pretty much all down to additional funding from Devon CC which is a good things.

Negative? with all the service enhancements it does strike me odd that easy bus travel between the two principal cities in Devon has become even more difficult and more expensive. Unless I have missed something it now impossible just to catch one bus from Plymouth City Centre through to Exeter City Centre? You either change at Ivybridge -  to to two hourly service to Exeter. Does not seem to be a guaranteed connection ?  Or you could get the Falcon – again dropping you off at a Park and ride so needing an additional bus into Exeter City Centre, and they have made it more difficult to buy through tickets on the bus. Anyone know how much a single to Exeter is in the Falcon these days – the ticket finder on the web site quote me over £12 surely that's not correct is it? There are a couple of departures available on Flixbus a day which seem to start at £3.99 when available which seems to be the best option that I can see – even that's twice the standard £2 single fare you can use between between most other towns across Devon & Cornwall with linking bus services – just not between the two biggest ones!

  1. X38 is poorly used, as well as requiring tachograph use and compliance. And the all the extra background work required for tachos. The changes appears to be a roll of the dice to reduce operational cost by removing the requirement for tachos,
With low patronage in its current form, it’s better trying something that reduces operational costs rather than completely cut. I assume the majority of Plymouth to Exeter travellers use the much faster train options.

Falcon tickets are typically cheaper through megabus website in advance than the advertised rates. Recently got Plymouth to Bristol for a fiver through megabus.

    1. nice to know you can get cheaper tickets in advance - but you should still be able to just turn up and pay on the bus for a journey like this one.

    2. With the added diversion via the 39 route, its now quicker to change at Totnes onto the 7 every hour and a much nicer place to wait when Gold inevitably runs late and you miss the connection.

  2. Looking at the new timetable for the 1A it looks like the departure stop on Royal Parade seems to be A20 which is some distance away from all the other services for Plymstock that use A10 and 11?

  3. It's a blow for Ashburton and Buckfastleigh, which do not have rail stations and do not have a stop for the Falcon despite it passing close by. They lose their direct link to Devon's largest city as well as having a longer journey to and from Exeter.

    1. The service could have been made more attractive though. The X38 timetable is next to useless with large gaps in the service and a last bus leaving Plymouth at 16.50, too early to be of use to shop and office workers. The new 38 is even worse as the last Ivybridge departure is at 16.22 meaning anyone wanting to connect from Plymouth would need to aim for the Gold at 15.35 and pray that it isn't delayed. Any notion that buses also have a social necessity has been totally lost here.

    2. Also DCC is wasting money on the 372 & 646 nobody will use or giving the 92 the luxury of an hourly service whilst allowing the key X38 to die, presumably as it does not cover the Plymouth area which is a separate authority much like Torbay which also lost direct Exeter buses before.

    2. What about us drivers that lost jobs in Dartmouth (and colleagues in Bude) with depots axed? Only offered transfer to very distant depots and only 8 weeks petrol money but now 6 months after RMT fight for us but too late as some already left leaving Stagecoach short of drivers again. It's not all about services but people's job here. We can't be expected to drive miles and miles to work on top of driving buses all day. Heard through rumours as well before eventually officially confirmed.

  6. I haven't lived in Devon for 4 years but on visiting Exeter yesterday I'm shocked how bad the service has become. Service G for example no longer takes plusBus on orders from Devon county council. There seems to be no originality in thinking anymore either, every service is just split to make life easier with bits axed. The X38 for example why not scrap the Falcon and put coaches back on the X38 like it used to be 20-25 years ago?

    1. Yes James Stagecoach no longer runs bits commercially such as the DCC F (only hourly) or any evening city buses which all become supported. Places like Thornpark now only served by extensions added to long R & S circulars. No dedicated RED park and ride. Cranbrook benefits from more frequent 4 but that's because of developer section 106 funding. As you say no X38 to Plymouth which was hourly fast city to city coaches in your day but had stops added & frequency cuts killing it. Also no direct X46 to Torbay like in your time in Exeter, staff get asked a lot for that link drivers say.

  7. Looks like E200 161 has been brought back into service per user 68 on bustimes.

Also Scanias - 6001,6002, 6003 have been withdrawn? Can anyone confirm?

  8. There are some nice frequency increases and tweaks to facilities i this. The extra evening journey on the 44 is like Sunday's and continues to Sidmouth as a 9 and returns.

Bus services that parallel trains are usually poor and always have been. The train from Exeter Central to Plymouth runs multiple times per hour all day 7 days a week taking about 1 1/4 hours including the change, compared to 2 hours on the irregular X38. The train fare is £8.80 railcard off peak return and there is the Devon and Cornwall railcard for residents of all ages. The general public considers all public transport for their journey and it is a balance of personal convenience and cost. Buses will not be run unless they are used and by more than taxi numbers of passengers.

Ashburton and Buckfastleigh are small communities and will not have a demand to big towns more than occasionally. Even their local 88 to Newton Abbot and Totnes is subsidised.

    1. The X38 was very well used when it ran hourly and fast taking just over an hour end to end, got so busy it received bendy coaches (was that around early 2000s Graham?) before becoming double deck bus allocated with more and more stops and more and more detours added virtually doubling journey times.
