Devon & Cornwall Transit 2021 Week 2

The usual weekly look back on what has been published on the Registered Local Bus Services site over the last week. As most weeks at the moment much of this has already happened due to very short notice changes due to COVID19. There are also quite a few changes outstanding that have not appeared in the daily download yet – and I am sure quite a few timetable changes that are being missed as they are not being published.

Highlights this week are a few changes for Transport for Cornwall / Travel Cornwall – none of which have been published on their web site despite already being in place (unless I have missed them). Taw & Torridge gain a couple form the aftermath of Carmel Coaches. First Kernow make a few emergency timetable changes due to Covid19 and we have the two registrations for the new Dartmoor Explorer which is officially due to start 12 February, but this I guess is subject to change under Covid restrictions which may or may not be in place at that time. More to follow on this – and timetables etc are still awaited. I can see this being a very popular service and they are clearly aiming to make an impression…

As usual click through on the licence numbers for full details and history for each route with maps and timetables where available

  1. Now the Dartmoor Explorer has been registered it will be interesting to see if it poses any sort of competition to SSW 1? I guess time will tell....

    1. I personally don't think First will be interested in competition with Stagecoach.

    2. We don’t do copycat competition. It’s a mugs game! We do innovation and ups!

    3. Be interesting to see if first breaks down or even turns up and you can Guarantee they will charge a fortune for the service, plus it will be the oldest busses they use as well

    4. The buses planned for the service are certainly not the oldest in the fleet by quite a long way. 07 Reg Volvo Wright double deckers are being liveried up for the service.

      Delete
    5. Two vehicles confirmed in the livery by Mark Huws are 37019 (WX55VJG) and 37181 (SF07FDO)

    6. That is old 07 reg almost 14 years old I can remember when they were in Plymouth never had new busses unless for park and ride or the new service they brought in for Plympton routes and other new routes was 4 altogether

    7. Sorry what is ups? Be interesting to see how they fit into Plymouth without copying some routes. TBF I never had many problems with First services in past .. probably the more reliable operator

    8. At least learn how to the word ‘buses’

    10. In relation to First using 'old' buses, Why would any company use brand new buses on a risky new service? Secondly since when have First been expensive?

      Delete
    11. Oh I am very sorry I put one to many s in 'buses' oh my god I do apologise plus if you travelled on first buses as much as I have when the were in Plymouth I can guarantee they were not reliable nore comfortable did not have no power in the engine suspension was bad and they were expensive for the rubbish service they had and no heating

    12. At least proof read what you type.. lol

    13. Unfortunately anon 21 Jan 18.46 ... if you make insulting comments like this you need to check what you are writing or you end up looking rather silly.

      Delete
    14. That is not insulting comment s God I bet you take everything as an insult, gosh I put 1 extra s in buses, so what I cannot be bothered with this and as for first being expensive they charge £15 for a day rider unless you buy a batch of day riders if you buy enough the day riders go down to £5 for cornwall. And you obviously think your better than everyone else because you spell better than some people but I can assure you your not looking down at people rather than help people who make mistakes in spelling feel sorry for you

    15. OK - can we not have any more comments / insults re spelling / typos etc. Lets try and keep things friendly here. Any more insulting posts will not get through. Thanks

    16. Have to admit in some places first are expensive. Some of there old manchester operations it was cheaper to go by train for a short jny then it was by first. as all you were offered was a sgl or firstday ticket unfortunatley rotala and go have kept firsts fare structure. And lets not forget it was first kicking off over price as the reason the ride cornwall conditions changed a huge hike of around £8 if you happened to hold a railcard. Tho in there defense a first west of england day ticket is very good value when you can get from salsbury-yate for £7

  2. A heads-up: Stagecoach is making a handful of temporary timetable changes in Exeter from 24th January and suspending the Honiton Road Park & Ride temporarily (passengers advised to use route 4 instead). From 31st January frequencies on Torbay routes 12, 31 and 35A/35C will be reduced temporarily. Interestingly Stagecoach says it has received new guidance from the Department of Transport, asking it to reduce services, so other areas and operators may follow suit.

  3. In the current T1 timetable First show a 2135, 2235 and 2335 Truro to Camborne Mondays to Saturdays. Then, in the TfC timetable, not showing t(e main daytime service presumably only those ‘tendered’ there is also a 2135, 2235 and 2335 T1 Truro to Camborne with the 2235 extending through to Penzance. Are both operators running these journeys is one/other showing the timetables in their publicity on behalf of the other. Thanks,

  4. Surprising they plan to use Deckers on the route, when they operated it some years back DCC would not allow the cutting of some of the trees making it very difficult for the drivers. Particularly the stretch between Moretonhampstead and Doccombe. Some of the trees were marked with red paint to alert the drivers. It's a fantastic route for tourists in the summer but to operate the route in the current Covid climate is a huge gamble.

    1. First’s tree cutting team have already cleared the route in one direction between Plymouth and Exeter and are half way through the return direction.
It’s not that risky. It all sits between their Cornwall College contracts.

  5. Single deckers never attracted tourists like double deckers did. I say good luck to them.

    1. When complaining about only SD being used on former DCC service I was told some trees had preservation orders meaning they could not be cut - has First resolved this issue??? DD are essential for this service to suceed!!!

    2. Yes the route is clear.

    1. I don’t think everyone is slagging off First. Just the odd person who has some preoccupation with being anti First.
I suspect the vast majority of people, like the City Council, Devon CC and the National Park, are really looking forward to a new route that offers a tourist product combined with some new local links for residents.
What’s more it’s clearly getting a lot of marketing support from First with refurbished and rebranded vehicles. First South West have a good track record with the or Atlantic Coasters in this market, and are known to be targeting this market with these sort of new and revived tourist products with a backlog of plans from 2020 and new ones for 2021 to launch.
Anyone who really supports and enjoys public transport will be looking forward to the Dartmoor Explorer. It’s something Stagecoach or indeed Citybus could have launched if they’d wished. In truth it’s FSW who are pressing ahead with new commercial initiatives as they plan for the post Covid world.

    2. Yes absolutely spot on, Stagecoach and Citybus have shown no desire to operate such a route which has let First back into Devon and as an innovative operator of such routes in Cornwall, Atlantic coaster and soon to be launched Lands End Coaster hopefully it will be a success. First buses have also been seen recently in Polperro and Looe so let's hope they are heading East. How about an open top Rome Service, Plymouth, Torpoint, Looe, Polperro and plenty of other options this side of Tamar I am sure

  7. But didn't they use double-deckers when it was the old 82 service? I seem to remember there was a newspaper item about not using open-toppers because of the trees, but that's all.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes DD were used until too many windows got smashed when nobody bothered cutting the trees anymore!

    2. The Plymouth City Transport Preservation Group entered Atlantean 131 in the Devon General Centenary Rally displaying "82 MORETONHAMPSTEAD" which suggests that double deckers were used in the past.

    1. Worse - only Dartline Solo latterly on DCC Exeter based 82 working. Plymouth funded 48 working was E200 in the end.

      Delete
  9. Plymouth Citybus, Western National/First and Stagecoach have all used a variety of deckers on the 82 over the years, due to trees it was then darts and finished its days in IIRC 2015 with Dartline and solos

  10. just read on a dartmoor walks web page that the start date has been pushed back from 12th Feb to 3rd April, due to lockdown

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes that is the latest likely 'earliest start date' now realistically depending on how the pandemic & mutations evolve.
