Unwanted back then but now coming home

A very welcome message from the PCTPG:

Leyland Olympian 172 TTT172X is joining our fleet. Paul Furse has struck a deal with London Bus Exports of Chepstow to purchase the bus, and if all goes to plan, it will hopefully be at Colebrook in a few days time. 172, 173 and 174 were the only Olympians bought by Plymouth City Transport and they arrived in March 1982. They weren't popular with Plymouth Citybus having all been withdrawn in September 1988

  1. Just out of interest, why weren't they popular with citybus?

  4. Oh dear! I can remember driving these. They were "state of the art" at the time of delivery, but IIRC the automatic gearbox became very problematic after a short time with the gearbox seemingly changing at random or not changing at all. Memory tells me that when working properly the bus was good to drive, but others may recall otherwise. With only three ever in service with PCT many moons ago - well done on finding what looks like a fairly tidy example. I look forward to seeing it back on home turf.

  5. I seem to remember a memo being posted when these 3 buses were sold asking for volunteers to drive them to Hong Kong. An early April Fool! Nice vehicle to ride in but auto gears struggled in the hills.
