Kingsbridge Running Day

Mark Bailey attended the 18th Kingsbridge Vintage Bus Running Day last Saturday (20 September) organised by the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust (TV&GWOT).  The weather was miserable for most of the day until the sun came out late afternoon.  Around 40 buses participated in the event but despite the weather people there still seemed to be a good number of people keen to enjoy the rides.

Kingsbridge Event

This year’s Kingsbridge Vintage Bus Running Day returns for its 18th year on Saturday, September 20.

Visitors can choose from 43 buses, dating from 1933 to 2025, including a brand-new electric double-deck bus that entered service with Go-Ahead’s Plymouth Citybus on July 7, 2025. These will run on 24 different routes.

To plan your day, programmes are available from the Kingsbridge Information Centre, the Trust’s gazebo at the bus station on the day, or online at www.tvagwot.org.uk.

The 52-page guide has full details of routes, timetables, buses, and journeys carried out during the day. Programme sales support organisers’ costs and help fund the Trust’s charitable activities.

This Souvenir Programme also features a photographic look back at the 17 previous Running Days, leading to this 18th “coming of age” event. This Souvenir Programme, like the Trust, is about connecting people, places and the past. It is your guide to vintage buses and coaches, offering free trips so you can experience what bus journeys were like back in the day, whether you're travelling to school or work, shopping, or for leisure.

The Coleridge Community Bus is again a highlight of the Running Day. Their 16-seater EVM/Mercedes will run a special route along the coast east of the Kingsbridge Estuary. It will visit Beesands, Hallsands, Start Point, East Prawle, and East Portlemouth, with spectacular views of Start Bay and Slapton Sands. Stops allow for short walks to vantage points and photographs of the bus in these scenic surroundings. As this is the only service visiting much of the area, it is a must if you haven’t tried it before.

Luxury coach tours also run morning and afternoon to the picturesque Blackpool Sands. Courtesy of the owners, passengers can enjoy a 40-minute break to walk the beach or visit the café.

Other services revive historic motor bus routes, as well as later additions to Salcombe, Thurlestone, Soar, Hope, South Pool, Slapton, Totnes, Loddiswell, Loddiswell Station, Goveton, Modbury, Moreleigh, Blackawton, and Bigbury-on-Sea. Short circular routes will also visit Churchstow and Aveton Gifford.

Organiser Colin Billington, who lives near Loddiswell, said: “We are really pleased to be able to put on our Running Day again this year. We have attracted a record entry of 43 vehicles, several making their first visit. We are very grateful for the backing of our principal sponsor, Kingsbridge’s own Tally Ho Coaches, and to other bus companies and local businesses who have supported the event by advertising in our programme.

“All of the roads we are using are former or current bus routes, and we are grateful to other road users for respecting the age and speed of our vehicles. The event is for one day only and gives enormous pleasure to many people while benefitting local businesses. It also shows the environmental benefits to those who may not have travelled by bus before and who are encouraged to do so after their Running Day experience.”

All services are free, with no limit on the number of journeys you can take.

Exmouth Event

Eleven vintage buses brought nostalgic travel to the roads in and around Exmouth on Sunday, August 31 st 2025 as the Devon General Society recreated local bus routes of the 1960s.
Free bus services ran from Imperial Road around the town, and out to Budleigh Salterton, Littleham, Lympstone, and Woodbury, whilst an open-top bus provided a local tour. Altogether, 1,977 passenger trips were made during the day. Paul Jenkins, Secretary of the Devon General Society, said “We were delighted with the turnout for our event, with many buses departing with full loads. We would like to thank everyone who travelled on our buses, the bus owners, and our great team of volunteers who made it all happen. We also appreciate the support we received from Exmouth Town Council, East Devon District Council, and Stagecoach South West. We hope everyone had an enjoyable day experiencing bus travel as it used to be.

Western National Kingsbridge 2024

Last Saturday saw the 17th Kingsbridge Vintage Bus Day organised by the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust.  Despite a forecast of thunderstorms the weather turned out dry and sunny.  Around 42 buses operated the usual mix of services radiating from Kingsbridge across the South Hams. Kingsbridge 2020 Cancelled

kingsbridge 2020

It was perhaps inevitable really but the official announcement has been made:

With regret, we've taken the very difficult decision to cancel our ever-popular Kingsbridge Vintage Bus Running Day, planned for 19 September 2020. We know how much the event is valued and loved by the town and the many thousands of visitors who come along each year; however, we feel sure you'll support our view that, in the midst of the current pandemic, it would not be appropriate to plan for an event that brings us so closely together. In place of the physical gathering, an alternative form of event is being planned for 19 September, which we hope you can enjoy from wherever you are. TV&GWOT Supporters can read a bit more in our latest 'Service 19' newsletter, scheduled to arrive this morning. Please also keep an eye on www.tvagwot.org.uk for more info over the coming weeks.

Its hard to see any bus events running this year.

20 September 2019

Late reminder for tomorrow..

Returning for our 12th year, the Kingsbridge Running Day on Saturday 21st September is going to include some interesting new routes as well as a different mix of vehicles for both regular and new visitors to enjoy.

The Running Day will be centred on Kingsbridge Bus Station on the Quay, operating services from 10.00 until 17.30.

The extensive network and full timetable give visitors the opportunity to ride on a range of vehicles to spectacular coast and country destinations all around Kingsbridge and the South Hams. The routes we plan to use were formerly operated by the Great Western Railway Road Motors, the Western National Omnibus Company and/or other local operators such as Tally Ho Coaches and the Coleridge Community Bus. In 2018 road closures affecting routes to the east of Kingsbridge encouraged us to explore the network to the west of the town.  These were popular and will feature again in the 2019 timetable.

general view

Features of Kingsbridge 2019 include:

-
Services to East Portlemouth, South Pool & Sherford, Goveton, Slapton, Salcombe, Hope Cove, Thurlestone, Bantham, Loddiswell, California Cross, Bigbury on Sea, East Allington, Kingston and Ringmore

-
Circular services provided by Coleridge Community Bus (in its 40th anniversary year) operating a route fr Kingsbridge to Beesands, North Hallsands, Kellation and Ford.  Their bus provides low floor access unlike more ‘vintage’ vehicles.

-
Special free vintage bus services to coordinate with the Royal Visit and unveiling of sculptures in Kingsbridge and Salcombe as part of the Salcombe lifeboat 150th anniversary celebrations: http://salcombelifeboat.co.uk/news2/  (0835 feeder service from Salcombe to Kingsbridge with timetable adjustments to suit possible short-term road closures).

-
Other circular services including Kingsbridge to Goveton, via Buckland-tout-Saints and Kingsbridge to Blackawton back through Strete and along the coast.

-
A circular ‘school’ service TNS004 through the Avon Valley combined with pre-war rail replacement route 177 from South Brent.

-
Coach excursions to Bigbury-on-Sea for the sea tractor and facilities on Burgh Island in the morning and to the sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands to the east of Kingsbridge in the afternoon.

-
Short workings with a town service via Rack Park and a circular to Churchstow offering round trip times of less than 30 minutes so enthusiasts can sample a greater number of vehicles in the course of the day.

-
Double-deck open-top rides on the Churchstow and Aveton Gifford services.

-
A number of routes with duplicate vehicles so that passengers can change vehicles at outer termini.

-
Refreshment opportunities with programme advertisers en route such as Burgh Island at Bigbury-on-Sea (Tour and Service 101), Millbrook Inn, South Pool (Service 99), The Sloop Inn, Bantham (102, 161), Salcombe Dairy ice cream (105, 100/109/100, 158), Aune Valley Café, Loddiswell (92/3, 103) and The Creeks End Inn, Kingsbridge

-
Refreshments at Loddiswell Station courtesy of the owners with proceeds going to Loddiswell PTFA to benefit the Pre-and Primary Schools (103).

-
Stagecoach service buses to and from Plymouth will operate through the day to the normal Saturday timetable

Stagecoach have not wasted much time in getting their ‘new’ Enviro 200 MMCs into service on the Kingsbridge Dartmouth route. I caught 37444 on Friday then Richard Smith captured the same bus on Saturday where he also observed sister 37441 on the same route.

Of course, for many of the the route will always be the 93. A reminder of days gone past on this route is also provided by Richard from the annual Kingsbridge Running Day back in September which I have just belatedly realised I never did publish here.

Kingsbridge 2018

Just a quickie to remind you all that the next big event down here is the Kingbridge Running Day this coming weekend. Sadly I wont make it this year but it is well worth the effort if you can make it. The rides they offer are second to none showing off the amazing little buses as they trundle along lanes you wouldn't want to drive in anything bigger than a car!

general view

On 16 September, our free vintage bus services will operate over 23 main routes, all radiating from Kingsbridge Bus Station. There are some new short workings giving extra variety for 2017's event and more possibilities for a pub lunch in the country or a quick pint in a village inn.

Where will you go?

Kingsbridge Running Day - 10 days time!

KINGSBRIDGE Vintage Bus Running Day is back, giving you the opportunity to travel the South Hams on classic buses.

This year’s running day will take place on Saturday, September 17. All services are free and there is no limit to the number of journeys you can take during the day. From the buses you will be able to see sights not possible from a car as you drive down the Devon lanes with high banks and hedgerows.

Since the first Vintage Bus Running Day in 2008, the event has grown in popularity every year and has become established in the Kingsbridge calendar on the third Saturday in September. Last year more than 5,800 passenger journeys were made on the 38 buses in service on 22 different routes. This year a record 41 vintage buses are expected so that extra departures are being scheduled in response to the demand experienced last year. On the most popular routes there will be more duplicate vehicles giving the opportunity to change vehicles at the outer terminus.

Last year, a morning tour to Blackpool Sands was introduced using two luxury coaches with a short stay to enjoy the scenery which proved to be very popular so this year the tour will be repeated in the afternoon with a slightly longer stay to give time for refreshments or a walk along the beach. 672 COD ride

To plan your day, programmes are available now from Kingsbridge Information Centre for £5, by post through the organisers’ website www.tvagwot.org.uk or can be purchased in the bus station on the day.

The programmes contain full details of the routes, timetables, the buses expected to attend and the journeys being carried out by each vehicle during the day together with illustrated features, this year on the horse-drawn stagecoach era including the Great Blizzard of 1891 and an 1892 description of the journey from Dartmouth to Kingsbridge.

The event will start at 10am and end at approximately 5.30pm with all services leaving from and returning to the bus station on the Quay. Early morning feeder services leaving Totnes at 8.40am, 9.20am and 9.40am will enable residents and visitors from there to travel by vintage bus to enjoy a full day out. Return services will run during the day and later in the afternoon, the last leaving Kingsbridge at 5.30pm for Totnes.

The event is being organised by the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust, a charity devoted to bringing historic transport to the public which has a base near Loddiswell. Vehicles are provided from the TV&GWOT collection and by individual owners who have lovingly restored them to their former glory and who are making them available for the event at their own cost.

Services are free all day and programme sales will help to defray TV&GWOT’s costs in mounting the event and provide much needed funds for its charitable activities so please support the Trust by buying one. P1010643.jpg

Some of the routes date back to the earliest days of motor buses where services in the South Hams were started by the Great Western Railway in 1909, both for local travel and as feeders to the branch line from Kingsbridge to the main line at Brent.

Services will revive routes to Salcombe, Bantham, Thurlestone, Hope, Sherford and South Pool, Beesands and East Portlemouth, Slapton, Blackawton, East Allington, Totnes, Loddiswell and California Cross, Goveton, Modbury and Bigbury-on-Sea.

A special feature of this event is the use of small country buses designed to safely negotiate the narrow lanes of the South Hams. From the comfort of a seat on the bus passengers will be able to enjoy travel at the leisurely pace of days past and the beautiful scenery.

Plymouth Citybus’s popular vintage Leyland open top bus is returning this year and will be joined by a similar vehicle provided by Stagecoach Devon. Both will operate on services to Slapton and Salcombe.
