  1. Big shout out to a small up and coming Plymouth based minibus company DAn travel who stepped in on Christmas day, boxing day and new years day making sure our wonderful NHS staff got to work at derriford hospital and made sure they got home safely. Good luck to them in 2026

  2. It's about time bus companies provided services on these days as other people still have to get to work in this 24/7 society we have now.

  3. I take you back to a comment made by the PCB Ops Manager back in 2012 on the topic

We were asked to consider a Boxing Day service this year possibly supported by the City Council or the City Centre Company, (so supported by the traders in effect). Current agreements require volunteers for such work and whilst we did have some staff come forward there were not enough to operate even a main road only service. (Remember you need engineering support and supervision, not just drivers in order to operate). Is there a call for buses on Boxing Day in Plymouth? There probably is. Unfortunately, with the continuing commercialisation of the Christmas holiday period how long will it be before shops open on Christmas Day and buses are demanded? Shop workers get almost no holiday as it is. The argument that we should operate buses in Plymouth because sister Companies operate services on Boxing Day is strange. I suspect that the cost of operating buses on Boxing Day outweighs the revenue generated several times over. Unless there is considerable financial support, I think it unlikely at the moment that we will see commercially operated Boxing Day buses in Plymouth.

    1. Stagecoach did operate boxing day services in Plymouth up until 2021 i think although I am not sure they were viable

  4. Although services were withdrawn in the first place as they were losing custom had had become financially unviable - they still have to be paid for. People who need transport will make other arrangements, and the NHS (which deliberately reduces services over Christmas so less staff and patient transport is required) can make alternative arrangements for staff that need transport.

  8. Any electric buses in Torbay yet?

    1. Not yet ins service, but they have started to appear around Torbay on test runs and driver training duties. Entry into service is likely to be gradual; as space is constrained at Torquay Depot I imagine fleet replacement will be on a one-in-one-out basis with drivers bringing an EV down from Matford and taking a diesel back.

A handful of diesels (almost certainly Scanias) will remain in the area for a few more months until the top-up order for six further EVs arrives later in the year.

  9. Christmas Day, Boxing Day & New Years Day services can be funded by the local authority, as part of their BSIP+ grant, as happens in Portsmouth, where there appears to be no shortage of volunteer staff.

    1. Sounds like the most sensible option for Boxing Day services in my opinion.

Regostered specifically for that day, and covering large areas meaning less buses on the road and ultimately not attracting such a high cost for running the day.

For example 21s run their normal route but not necessary to run the A as well.
42 could run an amended route up Southway Drive, Clittaford Rd, Dunnet Road to Tamerton and back in reverse. 44 could be rerouted to give the additional route along the corridor to Derriford then down to Whitleigh perhaps.

With some thought, even with some outreach months a head to get some idea of what people in Plymouth actually want on those days, it could be almost viable for an extremely slimmed down network of services on the day! But far, far more slim than even a Sunday service.

  10. I suppose Citybus did provide the football special services to argyle on boxing day same as new year's day in recent years
