This is huge...

I am holding back the usual bus changes as I am still working through them and there are loads still to come through my usual downloads. I reckon I have only had about half of them so far. I am now off on holiday for a week but hopefully over the next week the rest will come through and I can get a full list out!

In the meantime I was intrigued to coma across this dramatic headline in Plymouth Live

Huge changes for Plymouth buses on the way including Derriford Hospital route

I wasnt aware of anything big coming to Plymouth – so what are these huge changes?

Plymouth City Council has announced a series of improvements to local bus routes, thanks to funding from the Department for Transport. These changes aim to enhance connectivity across the city, especially to key destinations like Derriford Hospital and St Budeaux. The updates will roll out between late August and October 2025, with some services extended through 2027.

Councillor John Stephens emphasized that these upgrades are designed to support residents who rely on public transport and to encourage broader bus use across Plymouth.

🚏 Route-by-Route Summary of Changes

🔹 Service 14
  • Effective from: Sunday, 31 August 2025

  • Change: Will now run on Sundays and bank holidays

  • Route: City Centre ↔ Derriford Hospital via Devonport, Keyham, Beacon Park

🔹 Service 42/C
  • Effective from: Sunday, 26 October 2025

  • Change: Increased frequency on Sundays and bank holidays — every 15 minutes

  • Route: City Centre ↔ Derriford Hospital

🔹 Service 16
  • Effective from: Monday, 27 October 2025

  • Change: Extended to St Budeaux Square on weekdays (excluding bank holidays)

  • Route: City Centre ↔ Kings Tamerton ↔ St Budeaux Square

🔹 Service 2
  • Change: Continued funding for more frequent service until August 2026

  • Future Plan: Stagecoach to maintain the frequency commercially from August 2026 to August 2027

These updates are set to remain in place until at least March 2027, offering long-term improvements to Plymouth’s public transport network. Whether you're commuting to work, heading to hospital appointments, or just exploring the city, these changes should make your journey smoother and more reliable.

Talk about misleading headlines – these so called huge changes are the additions of Sunday services to the 14 which needs support for the rest of the week but does cover a large area of the city and the additional Sunday buses on the 42C. Then in October an extension of the 16.

I realise most readers will need a bit of time to take all of these huge changes in before you sit down and try to work out how it will affect your daily commutes. Once you have taken the time to absorb everything please let us know how you will be affected. Will you cope with such huge changes.

As a said, I am now off on a rare holiday so nothing else this week – back at the weekend…

  1. "Huge changes" is over-egging it somewhat - although it is always good to see news of service enhancements. The mention of March 2027 is interesting as that is when the £3 fare cap is due to be discontinued - hopefully a longer-term strategy for funding buses properly as a public good will have been devised by then.
