  1. It'll be interesting to see what buses PCB get for the new network

    1. It’ll be even more interesting to what 200+ drivers PCB have got.

  2. Wonder if first will sell up to go ahead as they looking at selling bus operators this could be a way of ridding themselves of a operator. Just a thought.

    1. In the latest financial results ending 31 March 2019 FSW made a healthy profit of 6%, slightly ahead of PCB (5%) and SCD (just under 5%). There's potential in the business yet!

  3. I believe that this will mean the end of PCB as a brand and that with the enlarged network they'll be rebranded as Go South West

    1. Plymouth Citybus will almost certainly stay put, like Go-Southcoast I expect to see the start of different brands elsewhere though. Go Cornwall Bus might stick around for East Cornwall at least and we might see something like "Go Kernow" maybe for the West? These are all ideas and who knows what will come of the network and branding! I think finding the buses, drivers and depots are all far more important to start with.

    2. Im pretty sure Cornwall by kernow is a council name all first get is to run the buses so it will most likely still be Cornwall by kernow but instead of saying a first company it will say a go ahead company

    3. Nope - Cornwall by Kernow is the trading name of First South West. Nothing to do with the council at all. Cornwall by Kernow will still be running buses in Cornwall - completely separate from Go Ahead.

  4. Aren't quite a few of Kernow's new buses used on contract work actually funded (full or in part) by Cornwall Council? Wouldn't this mean these vehicles would have to transfer to Citybus? Whilst 130 vehicles sounds big, the larger question is where to put them? Especially with Milehouse downsizing.

Whilst I love first it is great to see Go-ahead expanding into new areas and build a network in the Southwest similar to Go-South Coast. I was hoping Citybus would get the Truro P&R's too but I am not surprised First Kernow has kept that. I am sure Kernow will continue to provide a stellar service on the commercial routes and other routes they operate!

As for the School Contracts (Lot 2), I can't seem to find anything on those (Though I've not really tried)? Have they been split up or are they also taken by Citybus?

    1. 71 of the school contracts in lot 2 have been awarded as part of group bids with the local bus services - 148 are going out to retender (according to Cornwall CC publicly available papers).

    2. Lot 2 is being re-tendered as the successful tenderer came in way above budget so the specification is being downgraded to reduce costs. Result expected later in January.

    3. To put it in context it's a PVR loss for Kernow of about 30 buses from a fleet of 210. There is of course the loss of supported evening and Sunday journeys on otherwise commercial routes to consider as well.

    4. I'm told that 16 of the E200 MMCs were funded by the council so I presume there's scope to transfer these to PCB. FK bought all the other new buses without funding so they'll either stay in Cornwall or go elsewhere in the First empire.

  5. Congrats to PCB/GCB for the expansion. I reckon the E200/E400MMCs and E400s/E200s and MPDs will transfer as Citybus want to be ADL only.

    1. I think the contract requires Euro 5 / Euro 6 buses for the local services

      Delete
    2. Euro 5 and 6 specified so the MPDs would be too old.

  6. Big win - hope they don't find they've over-promised as some recent rail franchise winners did!

One other thing occurs to me - while this is a pain for First, I wonder how other Cornish operators will be affected? Travel Cornwall for example? I don't know the detail of what's in this contract, but I'd have thought that it included most of Travel Cornwall's services - will they have much of a business left?

  7. I imagine some staff will need to be laid off by First - and could TUPE across to GoCornwall (or whatever they are going to call themselves).

On the name - I should not be surprised if they keep the GoCornwall brand, especially as some of the lettering is in Cornish, which will go down well further west.

    As to depots:

I think just about all of the services in North Cornwall are tendered, so they will need somewhere from which to operate those. Is Western Greyhound's site in Summercourt still vacant (although they might think it unlucky)? Are the depots First no longer use still available (St. Austell and Wherrytown, Penzance come to mind)? Is the old Southern National (later Jennings) building in Bude available? They now use the former First out-station in Callington (with refuelling at Tesco's!) and I expect they are going to have to use a good many more out-stations - there would be quite a few of those which First will be vacating.

One last thought - what will happen where the contract is for evening and Sunday service on an otherwise commercial route?

    1. Just on the Depot front, Summercourt belongs to first now, all the others mentioned have been demolished.

  8. Certainly interesting times. I personally hope the GoCornwallBus name is axed in favour of something similar to Salisbury Reds or More Bus.

    1. No, please No !
The Go South Coast local names are the most meaningless brand names in the country. The old Wilts & Dorset name told you where they operated; Reds and Morebus mean absolutely nothing. Stick with Go Cornwall Bus, which says what they provide and where.

    2. I agree with Petras on this. Go Cornwall Bus is an informative company name, Same as Plymouth Citybus. Alot better than Bluestar, Morebus and Damory which seem to be desperate attempts to brand more areas than they need too.

    3. Western Greyhound didn't tell you where they operated but up until the fire it was one of the most popular bus companies in the Westcountry

  11. The Go Cornwall brand only seems to apply to the services via the Torpoint Ferry: the 11, 12, 72, 73, 74 & 79 routes are all 'Plymouth Citybus'. I wonder if this will change in the future?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Be intresting to see if a zone 4 ticket rockets or a new zone 5 introduced. Also dident dorset do the same a few years ago the winner in that case was go ahead i take it that as it wasent repeated it dident work

    ReplyDelete
  13. Agreed about zone 4 day riders, particularly if Citybus gain the routes between Bude and Wadebridge which would make for a great day out from Plymouth.

As for Dorset, the old County Council cut back severely its supported services, hence the reduction in Damory services. For the future, it'll be interesting to see what attitude the new Dorest Counncil takes when these services come up for re-tendering.

  14. I believe that PCB/GCB or Go South West as they will become will have an explorer ticket similar to the stagecoach explorer ticket

  15. plymouth city bus are putting small coach companys.out off work .buy under cutting
aline coaches in torpoint have lost 3 council bus routes
    and.have.lost 3 school.contacts
    leaveing them with.2 school contracts
    all thanks to plymouth citybus
that 5 drivers out off work

    1. There are protections in place that means Citybus would be required to employ anyone who looses work due to the transfer of undertakings. It's also not down to Plymouth Citybus but moreso Cornwall Council as they were responsable for the tenders.

  16. Whilst undoubtedly there will be impact on small companies, Aline had already cancelled one of its three bus services wef 18 February 2020, the Torpoint local service 32, as reported in Devon and Cornwall Transit 184. As far as I am aware, this service did not receive any council subsidy as when it was launched by Aline, the message was "Use it, or lose it".

  17. aline.coached town route was number 33 not the 32 route .and was funded buy orther bus routes like the 32 and 32c routes .
