Ever since I turned comment moderation on I have worried that occasionally good quality comments are either taking too long to get posted, or even just being lost. It would be so much easier if I could just let comments go straight through. However, that's not really an option when occasionally someone gets a bit too anti-Citybus or Anti-First or Anti Western Greyhound and strays beyond the acceptable. This isn't very often these days, but every now and again it creeps back up! I really do need to check comments before they go live. There is an alternative and that's to insist on registration and bar any anonymous comments. I don't want to do this as quite often people have good reason to remain anonymous and also its a lot quicker and easier if you don't have to log on. Checking comments is something which shouldn't take that long as the vast majority are fine and can get posted straight away. However, these days it is actually taking a lot longer due to the amazing amount of spam comments which get emailed to me. To give you an idea of how many, I am typing this intro at 10:30 Sunday morning. In the last 10 hours I have received 37 comments! At this point in time, my well organised In-Box which splits comments and Flickr notices into their own section has 69 posts. It was cleared yesterday evening. about 15 of these messages were legit!
Most of these comments follow a set pattern with some sort of rambling comment then a link to an unrelated web site, some of which you clearly wouldn't want to click on. Just to let you see the quality of the messages I have to trawl through each day I have decided to offer just a small selection for your viewing pleasure….

Yes I do agree some remarks are a little over the top, but I do think that some people are just a tad over sensitive on the issue. Posters who for example work for one company, used to work for another...or both are blatently biased towards their present employer etc. For example if I say that i use both companies but in the main find First to be more reliable and have generally friendlier drivers , I am not saying all about Citybus is terrible..they have some very nice drivers too, but some people take this comment as 'we all hate Citybus' not the way it is intended.
ReplyDeleteI agree that most are like you have said, its just that occasionally one or two go a bit over the top and we did have a few quite slanderous comments added (these dont get through).

ReplyDeleteIt is hard to know, if a contribution fails to appear, whether it never reached you or was, indeed, 'censored out'. One I sent in recently was critical of Citybus vehicles either showing no destination or one which was confusing or unhelpful - but also praided the design of their bus stop 'flags'. It didn't appear.
I am not aware of ever censoring any of yours - as they are always under you name anyway. I get aprox 50 emails everyday now of comments of these only a few will actually be true comments! The true spam count is probably even higher as I have a few automated filters which catch the most frequent ones

ReplyDeleteIt would be good if more people could use their own names, rather than 'anonymous' - or, if they are shy, a pseudonym 'handle' would still be better than 'anon'. I like the contributions from the destination display team as it is clear who is writing and that what they are saying is authoritative.
