Taking the P out of Barnstaple

This weekend saw the start of Plymouth Citybus services to Okehampton and beyond. I have seen quite a few photos of the buses on their first day so its certainly popular with bus enthusiasts at least. We have Dave Growns to thanks for supplying these two nice shots of 370. The otherwise excellent appearance of the bus is let down by the destination issues though... Plymouth Citybus 370 a To be fair Barnstable instead of Barnstaple is an easy mistake to make. I am sure they are not the first to make that one, but it does slightly spoil the show.
However this display is not good at all. Is it really too hard to show Great Torrington or even Grt Torrington? I am sure that next weekend they will be fixed!
Plymouth Citybus 370 b Thanks Dave for the photos

Edit: The photos have been modified at the request of the driver

  1. They're nice pictures from Dave Growns - I wish that I had the know-how (or is it luck?) of getting the destination displays on buses to show in the pictures which I take...on average in around four out of every ten pictures which I take the bus's destination display shows nothing at all although the bus is actually showing a destination and route number - Just what is the secret of getting the route details to show in the pictures which I take....anybody care to tell me please???

    1. I think to an extent it is mose definitely down to luck, although from my experience I'd say a dull cloudy day you tend to have more chance than on a sunny day. A higher ISO speed generally helps too.

    2. Generally, a slower shutter speed is needed to guarantee a blind to come out. At faster speeds, the camera outstrips the refresh rate of the LEDs, and the blind fails to reproduce. So it is easier with a stationary bus than with a moving one. The usual solution for moving buses is to use the camera's ability to take a series of pictures very quickly - 9 times out of 10, at least one of these will capture the blind.

  2. Easy mistake to make, Graham? - Just like Wset Park (instead of West Park) and St Stevens (instead of St Stephens).

Seems like someone isn't doing their homework, lets face it, hardly difficult to quickly Google a place name!

  4. 372 had broken down this evening (28/05) on Tavistock Road in Crownhill, not enough fuel for the round trip to North Devon?!!

    1. It was more serious than that as it had to be towed back to the depot.

  5. Just to confirm 372 did unfortunately break down with a fuel issue but it is nothing to do with the size of the fuel tanks. They are easily capable of a 200 mile plus day.

  6. No real problem towing back from Crownhill - but what would have happened if it had broken down in Bideford? Could Stagecoach have helped out with getting the passengers home?

    1. Citybus have a reciprocal arrangement with stagecoach regarding break downs in each other's territory

    2. Most companys have that arrangement stagecoach are very good at fixing other peoples busses

  7. I should hope so, 200 miles is nothing for a bus, should get at least double that
