Phew!

The withdrawal of the school buses is no surprise as Citybus flagged this up a good couple of months ago. It will be interesting to see who takes on most of this work in the new school year, assuming someone is willing to pay for it. The shoppers buses utilise the Student Link fleet during the day time so it makes sense for Citybus to cancel this work too. It remains to be seen how keen Tesco and Asda are to replace these services. There has been quite a backlash from parents who want the school buses to continue and of course the council has changed hands so it will be interesting to see how they respond to this issue over the coming months. At least everyone was given plenty of warning. The older yellow student link buses are well passed their best and should have been replaced a good few years ago. They have given a good fews years service for Plymouth and will be missed as they were good buses in their day.

I will wait a while before commenting much on the other changes to services 28 29 61 62 25. Hopefully it wont be long before Citybus detail what the changes will be.

  1. What will happen to all of the schools drivers?

  2. GoAhead pull out of school services in Plymouth. What about tendered work in Dorset or the massive school network on the Isle of Wight? Rumours abound that "another operator" has tendered en block for the latter!

  3. As far as I know most, if not all of the school work is commercial rather than tendered, its just that it no longer pays for them to carry on like this. Also the the school bus fleet will have to be replaced and someone has to pay for that! I guess if the council do come up with some funding and offer tenders then Citybus may well tender for the work. I am sure they could get a few more ex London DDs.

As for the IOW - I thought I read that SV had won the school contract for the island?

  4. The school bus routes Citybus currently operate are commercial services which operate without any subsidy and are losing money hence the planned withdrawal. There is no tender to win as the Council have not issued one. With the recent change in colour of the City Council perhaps there may be some money forthcoming. Any Labour Councillors out there who would like to comment?

  5. The Student Link B10Ms are my favourite buses in the fleet. They're really useful on their Contract school services (especially the 127 which gets incredibly busy), and they also come in handy on duplicate services in the PM peak (28B and the 40 are pretty much guaranteed, 34 is often one, less likely is the 50 to have a B10M). Annoyingly, both times I've got a B10M on the 28B it's been F601GVO, which has a real problem with slipping gears. I didn't know they were used on the Tesco contracts either! Love them or hate them, they'll all be gone by the end of July, plus there's only 6 left!

I didn't know all the Contract school buses were coming off (120/1/2/4/6/7/8/9), this will certainly inconvenience parents and children. Plus, in the letter sent to schools, these were not scheduled for withdrawal. Is this a new decision made by Citybus?

The timetable change for the 25 will most likely be a reduction in frequency or the Sunday service withdrawn (though the timetable says the Sunday service will operate until October this year).

The 29 will probably be giving it more time in Transit Way (it's horrendous in there at peak times). and Citybus did mention back in December they would be revising the times for the 61 and 62. (Again, probably more time around Transit Way!)

  6. I cant see how the School services don't make money..they are always packed and the extortianate fares Citybus charge should help!!!

Maybe First/Target could take on school and Shopper services ????

  7. To travel on the contract services (120/1/2/4/6/7/8/9) I believe you need a 'special' pass which is about £600ish that CANNOT be used on normal services. See the comments on this interesting story. http://www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/Bus-firm-warns-school-children-stop-ticket-scam/story-13619987-detail/story.html

The 127 is certainly an extremely busy service, though things like the 109 (Plympton Steer Park-DHS Schools) are nearly always full when I see it aswell!

'Mr Oliver accepted that the school buses were well used'...

"The buses due to be withdrawn are always full and sometimes students even have to stand up on them because they are so packed, so to hear that they are not profitable is a surprise." (from DHSB head teacher)

    - completely agree with him!

'The bus company has said that the 101 and 102 services will run in some form from September, but in what form? We need to know.'

    - this will be interesting to see!

  8. re school buses, its not the fact that they busy in school times, its that after the morning school run and before the afternoon school run, they are sat in depot unused (not making money).
i have heard our new md is quite keen to keep them and is trying to find a solution.

  9. Shopper buses were funded by TESCO and ASDA who like everyone at the moment are looking to save money. Hence their withdrawal.

  10. Seems a bit odd that Asda and Tesco both cancelled at the same time????

  12. My friend has just had her son confirmed as having a place on the 124 from September. I have spoken to one of the drivers who knows a thing or two, and the 120 etc are private contracts, so no longer need to be registered (guess this is what is happening with the Tesco and Asda buses as well)
