News catch up

A bit of catching up as I have missed a few bits of local news:

Regeneration chiefs have warned that plans to scrap direct trains between Plymouth and the North could hit the region's business and tourism.According to the South West Regional Development Agency all trains to and from the region will be hit by the proposals for 'no through' services to and from the North East and North West, and Scotland. Under the planned new Cross Country rail franchise, drawn up by the Government, many passengers will be forced to change trains at Birmingham New Street - just as the station undergoes major building work.

A spokesman for the Department for Transport insisted: "We want to encourage more people to use the railways.
"The changes we're making are designed to deliver more capacity and a more reliable service for the majority of Cross Country passengers."
The operator of the new franchise, which will start in November is expected to be announced by the Department for Transport this summer. Source
