My recent post about bridge 39 contained a few details about the goods yard behind the bridge. Thanks to Terry Partridge for filling some of the gaps in my knowledge (there are plenty of them!)
It seems that the goods yard did not connect up with the London and South Western Railway line at the bottom of the site. It certainly got very close - but no physical connection was ever made. At least it seems I was right about it being a builders merchant previously!
I have set myself a major project for the summer in reading up on the whole railway history of Plymouth so this is an area which will be revisited in due course.
If anyone can recommend any good books on the subject please let me know - even if they are out of print they often appear on ebay!
