As previously stated here. staffing on boxing day would be by volunteers. We could all come up with something we do not like about our job. If a business providing a service on a bank holiday to customers who want it is such a concern, then don't work for a service industry.lutongreenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17498574144460425468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11828686.post-56274126767627348792015-12-03T17:08:00.590+00:002015-12-03T17:08:00.590+00:00Thank you at least someone sensible its all me me ...Thank you at least someone sensible its all me me these days .Years ago you hardly saw anyone shopping on Boxing day but these days everyone is out come New Year shops are packed with returns.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11828686.post-50568169085908947992015-12-02T22:13:51.310+00:002015-12-02T22:13:51.310+00:00It's not operating in the dark ages, if people...It's not operating in the dark ages, if people didn't make a fuss of shopping on Boxing Day then the shops wouldn't open and people would be able to spend time with their families like Boxing Day should be spent. Companies like princess yachts shut down for 2 weeks at Christmas, but you don't hear people moaning because they have to wait an extra 2 weeks for their boat. It is 3 days over a 365 day year. I somehow seem to get service updates from First operations across south and sw England and every single one is providing some sort of service on Boxing Day, as is every single town/city based Stagecoach operation. I know for a fact that if First were still in Plymouth they had plans to operate services within the city on Boxing Day as well. Even more embarassing for Citybus is that I can not find any other Go Ahead op that is not operating on Boxing Day, so they are well and truly on their own, and we want to know why businesses etc won't come down here, could it be companies operating in the dark ages like this perhaps? More so, it damages the local economy. Think of all the shops etc open on Boxing Day that will be quiet cos people can't get there, as they have no Citybus to get there. If they don;t open next year their employees lose out on valuable extra cash. Not everyone is bothered about Xmas and attitudes like this will cost Plymouth dear, not to mention the fact people who have to work on Boxing Day will lose most of their wages paying for taxis. Well Done Stagecoach and First for understanding your obligations to provide a service.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11828686.post-58295143847803377532015-12-02T18:14:34.798+00:002015-12-02T18:14:34.798+00:00Boxing Day buses are normally operated by voluntee...Boxing Day buses are normally operated by volunteer drivers who get enhanced rates - in my experience there are always drivers who want to work to earn extra money (plus a lieu day) or have nothing else to do.
Go North East appear to be operating over 100 buses on Boxing Day.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11828686.post-27021474640213757082015-12-02T18:09:55.181+00:002015-12-02T18:09:55.181+00:00It's not about covering costs, its about provi...It's not about covering costs, its about providing a service for passengers who travel with an operator all year and the operator wants to keep them happy.
Even up here where Nexus wants to take control of services, the two large operators (Go Ahead and Stagecoach) provide extensive commercially operated Boxing Day services.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11828686.post-15340252264939256592015-12-02T18:04:45.254+00:002015-12-02T18:04:45.254+00:00There never was any more money for franchises, loc...There never was any more money for franchises, local authorities have to use existing funds.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11828686.post-87895031199670294472015-12-02T15:09:21.041+00:002015-12-02T15:09:21.041+00:00Scare mongering I'm afraid. As I noted on another thread Cornwall Council has made it clear that, despite having the powers, it is NOT intending to pursue bus franchising in Cornwall. The council's aims are to encourage bus and train use and to better integrate road and rail services. However they wish to achieve this through partnership working, not franchising. Franchising is very much seen as a "last resort" option, but not one they intend to pursue in the immediate future.Bennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11828686.post-33844469691614806482015-12-02T10:58:10.263+00:002015-12-02T10:58:10.263+00:00Christmas Day, I accept no buses.

Ideally a full Sunday service would be provided on both days, but I think at the very least, a Sunday level of service should be operated between 09.00 and 18.00 - and that applies to all routes of all operators where a Sunday service is provided. It appears that in Southern England most urban high frequency routes will get a special service and a few longer routes - Buses of Somerset is normal Sunday service. New Year's Eve is often Saturday service, but early finish or including night buses? - it varies. New Years day is Sunday or nothing (why?). However Christmas Day services show more of a desire to get the bus to replace the car. First 75 &78 Heathrow - Slough, Metrobus 10 Gatwick - Crawley (these are 24/365), but also Go South Coast M1/M2 extended as Poole - Bournemouth Hospital or Christchurch and Isle of Wight routes 1,3,5,7 & 9. You don't need a car - we do the driving. First Bristol by lowering and restructuring the fares and introducing 24/7 bus routes has seen a big jump in ridership and yes the do need every double decker they can get. Run adequate public transport and people do choose not to own a car, particularly true of single under 30s. My daughter complains when she can't get on the bus because its full - at 03:30! When will Plymouth get a 24/7 service?
