Looking back and forwards

This past week brought quite a few new notices, but most were about changes from back in November- one even dating as far back as September last year. Only two were for changes made in 2026, which, unfortunately, has become the norm lately.

Speaking of timetable changes, the Cornwall Buses website offers a useful analysis of the replacement services from Go Cornwall when First withdraws next month. It’s an interesting read from someone who really knows the services.

His conclusion:

In summary, the proposed Go Cornwall Bus timetables will essentially cover the routes that First is giving up. However, frequencies will be reduced in many cases. In particular, on the T1 section between Penzance and Camborne and the T2 section between St Ives and Camborne, the frequency on Monday to Saturday services will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly. On Sundays, many of the routes that currently have an hourly service will only have a 2-hourly service in future. Overall, there will be a reduction in the service levels.

  1. I see from this very comprehensive summary of the changes that the 'interesting' terminal manoeuvre on First's route 24 at the Safe Harbour Hotel in Fowey will be discontinued. GoCornwall Bus have long since abandoned this stop, in favour of the main car par in Fowey. So, if you wish to go and see the manoeuvre take place, you've got a month to get over to Fowey while First is still running the 24.

  2. I've seen on a private Facebook group that Go-Ahead aren't taking on all First Kernow drivers claiming their isn't jobs for them, but at the same time it now appears they are cutting frequencies??

    1. I guess they feel that there isnt enough money to be made? If First were successfully making money on their services they would probably have stayed.

  3. I think what has to be remembered is much like when stagecoach took over from first in 2015 (was it that long ago!) , they didn't take on 100% exactly what they did , because let's not forget it was loss making and not sustainable. This is no doubt the same again, as in what do Go Cornwall think can work for themselves . Hence the post last couple days how some frequency isn't the same as now. Which would all explain it.

  5. What about increased summer services? A few months away yet, but what plans (if any) are there for covering these?

  6. Franchising is the only answer, no bus company have ever made money in Cornwall

    1. So, who pays for the franchising, so that bus companies will be able to make money in Cornwall?

    2. Not strictly true. First Western National was mostly profitable until the early 2000s. Western Greyhound was profitable before the Summercourt fire, First Kernow was profitable before the TFC project and the change in Senior First Group management. I do agree it's time to bring all Cornwall's bus services into a franchise model like Manchester.
